Wilbert Vere Awdry, OBE (15 June 1911 – 21 March 1997) was an English Anglican cleric, railway enthusiast, and children's author. Better known as the Reverend W. Awdry, he was the creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, the central figure in his Railway Series. Awdry was born at Ampfield vicarage near Romsey, Hampshire on 15 June 1911. His father was the Reverend Vere Awdry (1854–1928), the Anglican vicar of Ampfield, and his mother was Lucy Awdry (née Bury) (1884-1965)

Wilbert Vere Awdry OBE (15 June 1911 - 21 March 1997) was an English Anglican clergyman, railway enthusiast, and children's author. He was best known for creating The Railway Series and its characters, as well as writing the first twenty-six books in the series from 1945 to 1972. His series and several of his original stories were later adapted for the television show Thomas & Friends by Britt Allcroft.

The Twin Engines book. The first book (The Three Wilbert Vere Awdry, OBE, better known as the Rev. W. Awdry, was an English clergyman, railway enthusiast and children's author, and creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, who starred in Awdry's acclaimed Railway Series. The characters that would make Awdry famous, and the first stories featuring them, were invented in 1943 to amuse his son Christopher during a bout of measles.

The first of the railway series was published in 1945. Awdry wrote 26 Railway books in total before Christopher took over the series.

Wilbert Vere Awdry was born on 15th June, 1911 to Vicar and railway enthusiast Reverend V. Awdry and his wife Lucy in Ampfield, Hampshire . Tramway Engines" becomes the last book to be published and the Rev. Awdry retires from writing children’s fiction. In the English countryside, a young Wilbert listens to the puffing of nearby steam engines and as he imagines their conversations, he doesn’t doubt that these engines have their own unique personalities. He has written 105 stories in a 26-volume series.

When the line gets busier a new engine is ordered, but a pair of mischievous twins arrive instead and cause a great deal of confusion.
