A Gracious Plenty book. As young children, Kate and her sisters often visited May, and Kate recounts in A Gracious Plenty her colorful memories of Kate's Great-aunt May Zeigler was a very important family influence in Kate's formative years. May was a professor of education at the University of Georgia for almost 40 years, but spent her retirement years in her native Orangeburg, South Carolina.

Kate Salley Palmer is the author of two children's picture books - The Pink House and A Gracious Plenty. Kate has also illustrated 12 Reading Recovery books published by Kaeden Corp. She has also illustrated four other picture books - Night of the Five Aunties (Albert Whitman C., How Many Feet in the Bed (Simon and Schuster), Upstairs and Octopus Hug (both published by Boyds Mills Press). Formally nationally syndicated as a political cartoonist from 1978 - 1988, Kate started doing picture books for children in 1991 when Simon and Schuster first published A Gracious Plenty.

Setting her reminiscence a generation or two ago, Palmer mentions what Great-aunt May didn't have (husband, children) before describing the home into which she welcomes young relatives and her comfortable nature and pursuits. Affectionate portrait of a person who once play a valuable role: the maiden great-aunt. A Gracious Plenty is a children's picture book I wrote and illustrated about my great aunt May Zeigler who lived alone, but had many treasures that we, her great nieces loved - her books, her life's experiences and stories, and her pleasant home that we visited almost every day. May came to our home often, especially after church on Sunday, and my memories of her are vivid, and will never be forgotten. She was born in 1882, graduated with a masters degree from Columbia University in New York City, taught psychology for many years at the University of Georgia in Athens, and retired to Orangeburg, SC. Her life was rich and she shared much with her family. She had, she said,
  • We have owned this book for years. It has been read out loud dozens and dozens of times. The book is about a maiden elderly great aunt. She loves her nieces. She is a wonderful integral part of their everyday lives.

The POV is from the niece remembering her childhood and the wonderful times she spent exploring her aunt's home, hearing stories from long ago, watching her father as he took care of his aunt as tenderly as he would his own mother.

My favorite line is at the end and is about how people miss her when she is gone. As adults, would know the author is talking about the dear aunt passing away, but children see a picture of her leaving on a train and assume she's on a trip.

This book appeals to both children and adults. It is written in an easy style and a first or 2nd grader should be able to read it. Our children are 10 and 8 and sometimes bring out Gracious Plenty to be read as a bed time story.

One of our other favorite books by the same author is "The Pink House" which I have read out loud probably hundreds of times. The kids still can't get enough of that one. We even considered buying one of the original paintings from the book from the author's web site, but the one we wanted was already sold.

  • If you were born and raised in the South ... Carolina to be specific ... you will always have a copy of both Kate Salley Palmer books. Kids all over the state can recite The Pink House word for word ... my grandkids surely can. And kids everywhere or anyone with delicious memories of family times together will love Kate's books.
