Selected by an expert on the topic, the redoubtable Susan Hill, of Woman in Black fame (the latter, however, not aimed at youngsters), it includes both minor classics and great unknowns from such authors as Penelope Lively, Philippa Pearce, Leon Garfield and Susan Hill herself (one of three such tales written especially for this collection).

Loving Angela Barrett, I feel disappointed that she was wasted on a pile of similar anodyne "ghost stories" such as these. There were some good ones, though. I was most impressed by the story by John Gordon. I most enjoyed "Nule," "Little Nym," "Grandmother's Footsteps," and "A Forever Friend. Of course, these are also some of the creepier ones!

Further information: Susan Hill bibliography. Hill's novels are written in a descriptive gothic style, especially her ghost story The Woman in Black, which was published in 1983. She has expressed an interest in the traditional English ghost story, which relies on suspense and atmosphere to create its impact, similar to the classic ghost stories by Montague Rhodes James and Daphne du Maurier. The novel was turned into a play in 1987 and continues to run in the West End of London, joining the group of plays that have run. for over twenty years

  • i love this book i read it as a child and since then have always wanted to own this book. some stories are sad, while others are scary and creepy but still delightful.

  • Came in great condition I couldn't be happier :)

  • I have read several collections of ghost stories, and this collection is the best of the lot. A large majority of the stories have great twists andd cast a palpable ghostly atmosphere. Superb!

  • Great ghost stories! My children require periodic stories of real ghosts, and I can't always make them up. This book is perfect - the ghosts interact with the children in the stories, but not in a thoroughly frightening way - it won't give them nightmares.
