Considered a masterpiece since first published in 1907, this enchanting, remarkably original work by a Nobel Prize-winning author records the adventures of a mischievous 14-year-old who is changed into a tiny being, transported across the Swedish countryside on the back of a goose, and learns about nature, geography, and folklore.
  • I'm sure it is a nice book so I didn't want to give it a low star rating. I just wish I would have realized it contained only a small handful of black and white drawings and is 99% words. Great for older kids, but I had hopes to share Nils's adventures with my four year old who still likes books with lots of art work and cannot read. I'll take the blame for not researching it more closely, but just wanted to let others know in case they thought there would be a lot of illustrations for little kids too.

  • Hardly read anymore in the U.S.A. this classic tale of a boy turned tiny, who rides on a goose's back all over Sweden, was written by the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for literature. Selma Lagerlof was commissioned to write a Swedish geography reader for children. She wound up writing a novel beloved by generations. Wonderful adventures indeed, incorporating not only the geography of Sweden, but many traditional folk tales, glimpes of the natural world, and bits of culture and history. Will Nils ever become normal sized again? Can he help the wild geese elude the bloodthirsty fox? Keep a map of Sweden handy to follow Nils and the wild geese as they fly north for the summer, and you'll likely enjoy this story even more.

  • Selma Lageloef's excellent story-telling skills are certainly evident in this adventure . It is enjoyable no matter how many times it's re-read. Published in the first decade of the 20th century, " . . . Nils" is a combination cautionary tale and geographic tour of Sweden. The book was used in Swedish schools to teach the geography of the country as well as a reminder for bratty kids to clean up their act & fits in with many of the adventure tales so popular with children in the middle-grades today.

  • I am an avid reader and have been slow to join the read on a screen movement. I read this digital book on an e-reader before bed and I enjoyed the experience. I don't think I would have picked up the hard copy of this book and kept up with it until the very end.

If e-readers can give new life to old classics, I think I like where the technology is going.

The story itself is full of whimsy. It was a perfect bedtime read because it was so relaxing and calm.

  • I bought this book thinking it was the complete story, but it wasn't!!

  • My mother grew up with this book, so I wanted to read it with my grandkids. You know, as an alternative to video games. I was surprised how well this classic stood a test of time. My 10 year old grandson loved it. He really got into the story and cared about it's characters: a boy and the flock of birds he travels with. He liked tracing their adventures on the map provided. The book is beautifully illustrated. We read it together.

  • In 1972, I bought this book to send home from Sweden for cousins. I hunted for one like it for my own kids, but could only find the very long original book. This picture book version is true to the original and has charming pictures and a good translation into English. It was in lovely shape and will enchant my grandkids for years to come.

  • If you are not already familiar with the Adventures of Nils, this is a recommendation I make quite strongly. Makes an excellent gift for a baby shower, etc. The overall quality and illustrations of this particular edition are excellent.
