  • The essential point of this book is that sedentary behavior is an adaptation that must be countered by adhering to a once-every-24-hour cycle of moderate exercise: in this case, indoor rowing. The book is decidedly non-technical, speaking of the benefits of exercise in only the broadest of terms, preferring to take a motivational approach.

The idea is to engage in an easy, total-body workout every day, breathing deeply in the process, resulting in benefits that will flow to your overall health, longevity, mental functioning, etc. Why rowing? A rower uses many of the large muscles, all the while being low-impact. The author discusses the selection of a rowing machine, although he clearly prefers a Concept2 machine, the leading rower on the market. The basic rowing motion is outlined with some elaboration on a few aspects. Among problems mentioned by the author, he fails to include strain on the lower back, a not uncommon injury for rowers.

The lack of technical information could be frustrating. For example, something as simple as "what pace to row?" is not discussed. Of course, pace, or time per 500m, is the standard display for a rowing machine and is the basic measure of how one is doing. The types and lengths of workouts are only vaguely presented - rowing twenty minutes a day is good, but forty-five minutes is better. Interval workouts are minimally discussed with the glaring absence of pacing. Consecutive days rowed seems to be the most important stat for the author.

The book is definitely geared to beginners, preferably to those with plenty of time on their hands. Athletes and intermediate rowers will find the book to be quite simplistic and inadequate. • I purchased a Concept2 Model E rower a little over a month ago and have been using it for an hour a day 5 days a week. This book provides a tremendous amount of motivation for the beginning rower like me.

At 65 years old and having used every type of exercise equipment on the market, I find that rowing provides the most thorough and satisfying workout. While I'm sure that experienced rowers will find this book to be too simplified, for my purposes it was perfect. It taught me how to row properly and how to minimize injuries. When I first started rowing, I thought that it was mainly an upper body exercise. Having read the book, I now know that pushing with your legs is more important than pulling with your arms. Now when I row, I concentrate on using my legs, which is something that I didn't do properly before reading the book.

The only hard part for me is rowing every day. As mentioned, I do an hour a day, 5 days a week. That leaves my weekends free and also allows me to do other forms of exercise such as walking. Obviously from what the author says, it's best to row 7 days a week, however I'm finding tremendous benefit by adhering to a slightly different schedule.

I highly recommend that people who are new to rowing purchase this book. It will teach you the proper techniques and will give you the motivation to succeed.

  • Rowing machines are the almost perfect piece of equipment. Low impact, easy on the joints, scalable from a mellow to an extreme level of workload. BUT, as I look about the gym I'm amazed at the poor form, and potential injury, that people bring to the activity. From "clean and jerk" types, to low back strainers, to hunched over lat-pull users, there are dozens of ways to row that offer minimal benefit and yet a high likelihood of injury, or at least strain.
This book is simple, and aimed heavily toward motivation, but it at least gets new rowers on the right track in terms of form. If all you end up doing is mild rowing, every day, with proper form you'll be ahead and will have benefited from this read.

  • I recently bought my own rower and was looking for guidance on smart use of it. This book provided a good perspective on not limiting my use of the rower. The approach of daily rows makes it easier than worrying about rowing 3 times a week and then missing one (or more). Rowing has also become my replacement for running, after years of not running because of continuous leg and foot problems. The full body rower workout helps me break a solid sweat and achieve the "runner's high" that I have missed for so many years - and that is the biggest benefit!

The program outlined in this book works for me. The workouts have raised my conditioning level to make my other hobbies more enjoyable. It also recommended getting involved in the online rowing community. I set up an account with concept2 and have participated in one challenge to date. The challenges and the logbook tracking give me regular visibility into my performance, which has been a great motivator by feeding on my competitive nature.

The biggest gap in the book to me is that it doesn't provide a complementary stretching program, so you have to figure that out on your own.

I recommend this book for all of us ex athletes looking for an effective exercise that doesn't pound our joints.
I feel it has given me a workout approach I can sustain through the rest of my life (I'm shooting for another 50 years)!

  • This is most likely the only book I'll ever read about rowing. I bought it for my Kindle on a whim, but it's worthwhile, though very wordy and repetitive. I already owned a Concept 2 rower beforehand so I wasn't looking to be convinced of the appeal of this exercise. Someone who's considering the sport may benefit more from this book. I mostly appreciate the author's philosophy of rowing every day. This is what I now do and it's benefited me in innumerable ways, just as the book espouses. Of all the exercises in the world, rowing on a quality machine has proven to be the only one I can stick with. I highly recommend it.
