Alexander Lowen challenges conventional thinking and conte. Alexander Lowen challenges conventional thinking and contends that neurotic behavior stems from a fear of life, and represents the individual’s unconscious effort to overcome that fear. But one cannot do so. One can only suppress or deny it, at the cost of spontaneity and being at ease. Lowen explains that being a person requires that one stop their frantic doing, and take time out to breathe and to feel. If one has the courage to accept and feel the pain and hurt, despair and sadness, and inner emptiness or anxiety in one’s life, one can heal trauma and gain pleasure, fulfillment, and jo. .

A former student of Wilhelm Reich, he developed Bioenergetic Analysis and founded the International Institute for Bioenergetic Analysis. Dr. Lowen is the author of many publications, including "Love and Orgasm, The Betrayal of the Body, Fear of Life, Joy, " and "The Way to Vibrant Health.

Their concerns are not about their individuality but about the river of life, the family, the community, the nation, people, animals, nature, life. They can die easily if they are assured that life will continue positively, for they feel part of the river again, and soon they will be part of the ocean. When they are very old, they no longer belong to our time and space, but to all time and all space.

Alexander Lowen M.D., world famous psychiatrist and creator of Bioenergetic Analysis shows you how to resolve your fears and allow yourself to: â?¢ Surrender to love â?¢ Let go rather than control â?¢ Be rather than do â?¢ Flow rather than push
  • Incredible book. The last chapter, written in Lowne's old age, pretty much describes the meaning of life. Incredibly insightful information in the book. I am not a professional practitioner of therapy have merely been through it myself and am interested. I had heard of the Oedipal legend way back and was vaguely aware of its place in psychology. Lowen's description and analysis of the Oedipal taboo was very enlightening to me. Lowen's reading some twenty years ago into the harmful effects of the progress of man...through the perspective of industry or technology... are evermore important and relevant today.

  • This book is quite powerful. An insightful look at the neuroticism that permeates everyday life. I've read dozens of books and listened to lectures that surround this topic, but none have struck so precisely as Lowen's work. It ties together the peripheral ideas of so many others in a profound way. I had to put this book down several times in order to process what I had read, as it cut so deeply to the core of questions I'd had about my own psychology for years.

  • Our culture is driven by a fear of death--other writers have said as much. But to my knowledge, only Lowen has identified where such a strong fear of death comes from--The Fear of Life!

Lowen and Bioenergetics has changed my life. The message is not easy but it is hopeful: change your body and you can change your feelings and your life.

The book explores how the need or drive for children to exceed their parents leads to suffering both within families and within our culture. It does indeed strongly endorse and make vivid Freud's idea of the Oedipal Complex, but it is much more than just a reworking of Freud. Lowen brought enormous powers of observation and decades of clinical experience to the task of defining what happens in human development that leads to emotional limitations and suffering.

For non-therapists, Joy: The Surrender to the Body and to Life (Compass) might be a better book to start with (fewer psychoanalytic concepts), but this is Lowen's most powerful book.

  • Basically the book contains old and highly outdated Freudian theory as a foundation. Given that, the author still has some good insights about the human condition regarding fear.

  • There is a lot of truth in this book that is hard to handle. But when I see past all that, the book does make my life experience make sense. I understand myself and others much better now.

  • Alexander Lowen's books have been so helpful to me in developing better understanding of my body and life. He writes with lots of respect and understanding. I recommend this to everyone. His books changed my life.

  • Very interesting book. It informative, detailed, and makes you question yourself.

  • This book explains so much about how our childhoods affect us. Not just conceptually, though Lowen does a lot of at with Freuduan theory. Lowen explains how the concepts become physical issues. He has a direct and simple way of writing and I found it very helpful.
