Amedeo: A True Story of Love and War in Abyssinia. Though the story revolves around Amedeo Guilllet, one learns about political friction in Italian politics, Italy's successes against the British, and Italy's relationship with Hitler. The book paints a very accurate picture of the landscape of north-eastern Africa. The maps are good, but could have been better. The book is gripping, and difficult to put down.

Amedeo hovered at the edge of the group waiting for the story to end. He took a deep breath, walked forward and made . Amedeo had thought little about the wider objectives of this war, seeing it simply in soldier’s terms: the Patria had to be defended. He took a deep breath, walked forward and made his sharpest Modena salute before the major, then presented himself. Ah yes, Lieutenant Guillet,’ the major replied coolly, while the other Spahy officers adopted expressions of uninterest. But now he began to embrace the imperial enthusiasm of the Duce. A people who could built a city like Asmara could transform Ethiopia from a wilderness into an empire that would echo the glory of ancient Rome. • This book has received much more attention and accolades in the UK than in any other country including Italy. It's a pity, because the events in the book are not a fruit of fiction but the real history of the beginning of the second world in the african continent that has been obscured by conflicts in other fronts of the globe.
Since the printing of the book Amedeo Guillet has died well in his hundred and with him a piece of extraordinary history and events that should not be forgotten as they represent human dignity, courage, honor even in the face of war. Really well worth reading and enjoy either as an history buff or just as a good reading..

  • This book gives an echo from another time when honour nationalism and pride could define a person. Fortunately all events in history are not black and white but quite nuanced like this book.
