  • I read this book in Portuguese and loved it and I am really happy to find an English version on Amazon.

Spix (zoologist) and von Martius (botanist) made an epic 3 year journey through Brazil. Von Martius wrote the still essential Flora Brasiliensis (which list 20.000 species) and Spix collected 85 species of mammals, 35 species of birds and 2700 species of insects. They discovered many species new to science, of course.

But this book isn't about the science, but a very engaging account of their travels, their enchantment with magical landscapes and their observation of social issues. They visited many places (like the Serra do Mar, Espinhaço Range, Peninsula de Maraú, Belem, Manaus, Mamiraua), which today are special ecotourism destinations in Brazil.

It is very interesting to see people and places ... through their eyes ...two-hundred years ago.
