The Texas Marathon started as a marathon event only. Later we added a half marathon to accomodate family members and local runners in the interest of promoting the sport. We became that our event has changed its focus from a marathon to a half. This was not our intention.

The marathon is a long-distance race with an official distance of 4. 95 kilometres (approximately 26 miles 385 yards), usually run as a road race. The event was instituted in commemoration of the fabled run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, a messenger from the Battle of Marathon to Athens, who reported the victory. The marathon can be completed by running or with a run/walk strategy. There are also wheelchair divisions.

The London Marathon (currently known through sponsorship as the Virgin Money London Marathon) is a long-distance running event held in London, United Kingdom, part of the World Marathon Majors. The event was first run on 29 March 1981 and has been held in the spring of every year since. Since 2010, the race has been sponsored by Virgin Money. The most recent event was the 2019 London Marathon on Sunday, 28 April 2019.

It may be said that communities are often greater than the sum of their parts. This greater sense may indeed be a spirit imbedded in all who know and live in a particular place. This is certainly the case with Marathon, Texas. A History of Marathon Texas is a rich account of the many people and events that make up this most unique West Texas town. The story of Marathon is the story of the American West as cowboys, Indians, soldiers, railroadmen, miners, merchants, families, and many more have crossed the historical stage. The result is a thread in the tapestry of Texas local history. In a sense it is a history of home and for many people Marathon serves as that special place. For those interested in the Big Bend region of Texas this volume is a must. - Kenneth D. Perry, Director Museum and Archives of the Big Bend
