Newport In The Rockies. Marshall Sprague (March 14, 1909 – September 9, 1994) was an American journalist in New York, Paris, and China and author of books about western United States History. Marshall Sprague, who wrote books about the American West, died last Friday at St. Francis Hospital in Colorado . Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs, his hometown. He was 85. He had had a long illness, said his wife, the former Edna Jane Ailes. I attended the Air Force Academy from 1969-1973 and fell in love with Colorado Springs and the suroounding area - although I do not particularly care for what has happened since I left. This is a thoroughly engaging biography of the city, although Sprague is not always the most engaging writer.
