This book traces the evolution of the rain god from tourist art to India Rain gods and their relatives developed out of an earlier tradition of larger hollow clay figurines, the earliest of which was collected at Tesuque Pueblo in 1879. They continue to be produced at Tesuque Pueblo to this day, constituting the longest continuous figurative art tradition in the Southwest.

Duane Anderson was trained as a southwestern archaeologist at the University of Colorado-Boulder (PhD 1972). He spent 20 years in Iowa serving as director of the Sanford Museum and Planetarium, and later as State Archaeologist of Iowa at the University of Iowa.

It was very finely sculpted and painted with a traditional design. Each cheek has a sun symbol which contributes to the charm and happiness of the figure. Condition: structurally in original condition. There are fire clouds on both arms and a small amount of slip was abraded when a piece of masking tape was removed from the rear of the figure.
