The American frontier includes the geography, history, folklore, and cultural expression of life in the forward wave of American expansion that began with English colonial settlements in the early 17th century and ended with the admission of the last remaining western territories as states in 1959. This era of massive migration and settlement was particularly encouraged by President Thomas Jefferson following the Louisiana Purchase, giving rise to the expansionist philosophy known as "Manifest Destiny".

Mormon missionaries arrived on June 14, 1855 and selected a site, along one of the creeks that flowed from the Las Vegas Springs, on which they would build the fort. The fort served as the midpoint on the trail between Salt Lake City, Utah and Los Angeles, California. The fort was surrounded by 14-foot (. m) high adobe walls that extended for 150 feet (46 m). While called a fort, it was never home to any military troops but like many Mormon forts provided a defense for the local settlers against an Indian attack.

Born near Sacramento, Aurora Hunt (1881-1965) attended the University of California at Los Angeles, where she developed a keen interest in the military history of the West. She later studied under prominent Western historian Henry E. Bolton, who encouraged her to write several outstanding books on southwestern history. The Arthur H. Clark Company published The Army of the Pacific as the first volume in its distinguished Frontier Military series. Hunt based her study largely on primary sources, particularly rare territorial newspapers.
  • I purchased this book to help round out my collection of books on the American Civil War in the Southwest US. I am glad that I did, but it is also very dry, and not just focused on the major issues. The largest issue is that the table of contents, index, and general layout of the book are not condusive to ease of referance.

I do recommend this book as it contains much valueable information, especially on the events in the Southwest beyond the scope of the New Mexico Campaign in 1862. That is honestly only about a third of the book at best, and is treated with more depth in other resources. This book does cover much of the skirmishes and relavent issues from 1860 to after the ACW in 1866 when the remainder of the Volunteer forces "Out West" were finally stood down and replaced again by regular army units.

The coverage of the French forces in northern Mexico, along with the informaiton about the Confederate sympathizers in northern Utah, are certainly the best highlights of the book. For that information alone, I feel this is a valuable addition to any collection on the ACW in the Southwest. I was also pleased to collect a variety of information about the goings on in the Pacific northwest during this time frame as well.

Each chapter is also begun with a small map to "get your bearings" before delving into the material presented about that part of the nation. As the author was born in the 1880's, she was also able to get more information first hand. So while the book is lacking in some of the detail of more modern treatments of the Southwest, it is done by a real historian with attention to the details. In fact this is also the first book to be published on the topic.

  • Not very exciting, but the big battles werent fought out West. Very good research. If your from the West and love civil war history this is a book for you.
