No cover image. My interest in the history of organized crime goes back to the early 1960s when I saw my first episode of The Untouchables television series. Eliot Ness was one of my heroes, and in 1997, I initiated what turned into a memorial service for the famed crime fighter at Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland 40 years after his death.

Organized crime and the mob figures who run it have long captured the imagination of the American public, appearing since the early twentieth century as characters in a host of popular books, movies, and television programs. But often what the public knew of such figures and their criminal careers was as much myth as fact. This book offers highly readable, carefully researched biographies that dispel the the myths but preserve the fascination surrounding 10 infamous New York mob leaders of the twentieth century. Each in-depth biography will help interested readers understand how and why each of these men achieved special notariety within the world of organized crime.

Each biography describes the early years of each man, assessing how he came to a criminal career; his rise to prominence within the mob, providing reaction from those who knew him and witnessed his actions; and the last years of his career, assessing why it ended as it did. Each biography is illustrated with a picture of its subject and concludes with a listing of additional information resources, both print and electronic. A detailed subject index provides further access to the large amount of information contained in each biography. A timeline allows readers to quickly and easily track the birth, death, and important events in the life of each mobster.

  • Over the decades there has been much incorrect information published on New York crime kingpins such as Frank Costello, Albert Anastasia, Lucky Luciano and Dutch Schultz. Allan May's GANGLAND GOTHAM, NEW YORK'S NOTORIOUS MOB BOSSES is a well-researched, well-written, straight-shooting examination of those men and others that dishes up the straight skinny. After reading GANGLAND GOTHAM, the reader will have a truer picture of the life and crimes of 10 organized crime bosses.

Along with the four men mentioned above, May chronicles Joe Adonis, Louis Buchalter, Carlo Gambino, Vito Genovese, Arnold Rothstein and Abner Zwillman. Crime buffs looking for Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky will be disappointed, May dropping both because they skipped out of the Big Apple early in their careers and found fame - infamy? - elsewhere. The biographical chapters on the 10 bosses make for compelling reading. The chapters range in length from 22 to 34 pages. Each includes a small photograph of the boss in question.

Other criminals of note are covered in a chapter entitled 'Biographies of Other Prominent Figures Mentioned in the Text.' Herein can be found 'Joseph' Florino, Salvatore Marazano, 'Joe the Boss' Masseria, 'Niggy' Rutkin and others. And a final 'Appendix' touches upon various crime-related topics such as the 1957 Appalachin Summit, the 1930-31 Castellammarese War, the Night of Sicilian Vespers, etc.

All in all, GANGLAND GOTHAM is an informative, appealing expose of some Big Apple crime heavyweights. It's also horribly overpriced at $95.00. The price certainly doesn't reflect a wealth of illustrations since GANGLAND GOTHAM is almost totally lacking in photographs aside from the 10 tiny pix mentioned above. The book tops out at 426 pages but does that merit such a stiff price-tag? Methinks not. While I definitely recommend May's book, I'd suggest getting a copy from your local public library or waiting for a paperback edition.

  • The first thing you will notice about this book is the hefty $95.00 price tag. However the book is larger in size than the ordinary hardback copy of a book. In addition the print is somewhat smaller so there is more information on each page than you would ordinarily find. The book begins with 40 pages of Roman numerals of timeline from the years 1882 through 1976 of happenings relating to crime in New York City. Pages 1 through 330 include rather comprehensive biographies of the following gangsters:

    1. Joe Adonis
    2. Albert Anastasia
    3. Louis Buchalter
    4. Frank Costello
    5. Carlo Gambino
    6. Vito Genovese
    7. Lucky Luciano
    8. Arnold Rothstein
    9. Dutch Schultz
    10. Abner Zwillman

Shorter biographies of other individuals that are mentioned in the text are included from pages 331 through 362. These would include, among others, such "notables" as Irving "Waxey Gordon" Wexler, Jacob "Gurrah" Shapiro, "Joe the Boss" Masseria, and Salvatore Maranzano.

An appendix follows from pages 363 through 404 which includes information on subjects such as, among others, the Apalachin Summit which took place in 1957, The Castellammarese War of 1930--1931, The Last Testament of Lucky Luciano, Joe Valachi. A biography and index conclude the book.

Yes, there are full length biographies of some of the individuals listed above, but if you would be looking for a book that would include rather lengthy biographies of those listed you would be spending less than you otherwise would. In addition, some of those listed in this book such as Albert Anastasia do not have biographies written about them elsewhere.

I enjoyed the book and find it to be a worthy addition to my crime library.

  • This book is written and researched by amazing author, Allan R. May, an organized crime buff!! The book is divided up into @ ten chapters, each one about an individual mobster/racketeer/bootlegger! This book has been priced very high all the time, until I ran into the offer from the "used book store" and decided it was not going to be getting any lowered! Great speedy delivery and as advertised, the book was like "new"!!! Thanks Amazon, this was one easiest transaction I've made!!
