Hardie, Dee. Publication date. Books for People with Print Disabilities. Internet Archive Books. Uploaded by Alethea Bowser on December 1, 2011.

Her book is filled with wisdom, life's sadness and joy, and of course the lambs and hollyhocks. As I finished the book I read that Dee Hardie passed away in 2015 after a long (b. 1926) and fulfilling life. She seems to have been a person who was a delight to have as a friend or an acquaintance and her book reflected her inner light. I'll pass this book to Dylan as it has some classic Maryland recipes including one for Maryland Oyster Stew.

When Thornhill Farm was first encountered by the Hardies, there was, on the face of it, little that met that requirement. But the then-young wife saw one wonderful possibility-a space for a tiny cloistered garden-and she was captured. The love affair with her ungainly find was to continue for more than 30 years. In 1985, Atheneum Books in New York published her first book, "Hollyhocks, Lambs and Other Passions: A Memoir of Thornhill Farm," which was followed two years later by "Views from Thornhill. A splendid memoir of the kind of family life and country home we all dream of, done with not a little wit and empirical wisdom," wrote William W. Warner, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Beautiful Swimmers," of Mrs. Hardie's first book.

This memoir, by the author of "House Beautiful's" popular column, "View from Thornhill," recounts her life in Thornhill Farm, a place made special--and beautiful--by a woman's love and care
  • I read this book twenty years ago, and enjoyed rereading this summer. Sent my cherished 1st edition to a friend and needed to replace it. This is a heartfelt share by the author of her love and nurture of an old Maryland farmhouse, and the four children she raised in it. Delightful. She had Martha Stewart beat way back in the day~ Highly recommend.

The one I had was paperback, and the Amazon one is hardback, so I was thrilled to get it!

  • This is my favorite book of all time. I have probably read it over 40 times since it was published. Sometimes, just reading a nice story told with love and humor strikes a chord as this one did with me. Long out of publication, it is worth finding a used copy for both yourself and to give as a gift, especially for a young couple just starting out.

  • Dee Hardie's magazine columns were warm and uplifting, and demonstrated a lovely way of life. Highly recommended.

  • Loved this book!

  • Dee Hardie has such a way with words. I loved being transported to her world.
