Book by Haviland, William
  • This is probably the best book there is on the native people who lived in Vermont before it was overtaken by European colonization in the 18th century. Haviland has done an impressive job.

  • Book is focused primarily on the Indians of the Champlain Valley. I found that the sections on archaeology were quite good. Th sections on recent history not so much. Other good books of this genre include "Western Abenakis of Vermont, 1600 - 1800 by Calloway, "Notes on a Lost Flute" by Hardy and "Twelve Thousand Years" by Bourque. The last two books are focused on the Indians of Maine but the story is much the same.

  • Haviland and Power have done a fantastic job of creating a scholarly, yet readable, work that incorporates everything from archaeological data to information about traditional culture and mythologies.
