Of the People: A History of the United States not only tells the history of America--of its people and places, of its dealings and ideals--but it also unfolds the story of American democracy, carefully marking how this country's evolution has been anything but certain, from its complex beginnings to its modern challenges. This comprehensive survey focuses on the social and political lives of people--some famous, some ordinary--revealing the compelling story of America's democracy from an individual perspective, from across the landscapes of diverse communities, and ultimately from within the larger context of the world. Beginning with emancipation and Reconstruction, Volume II: Since 1865 covers Americas history up through the age of globalization, the war on terror, and the election of the first African-American president of the United States.
  • About every 5 years or so I like to read a recently published source history of the US. I find that the overview keeps fresh in my mind the thread of this nation's dynamic journey through time. This is a very well written history with some solid hypothesis offered in to spur further reading/thought on specific epochs. I am looking forward to reading volume 2.

One interesting note: On page 411 the picture which is labeled and described as a Lincoln/Douglas Debate poster is actually an 1864 Presidential campaign poster for Lincoln/Johnson.

  • Thanks

  • great for school

  • I had to buy this book for my History class. I am not a big fun of the history, however I enjoyed the class and learned a lot. This book provides great supplement to the lecture. I like the way that this book is small, good language and reasonable price comparing to other text books.

  • I needed this book for my college class, and it's a pretty good book.

  • I used this in my U.S. History to 1865 class. It was a great resource. The writing style was not totally dry and there was lots of maps, graphs, and the like to help keep one interested and break up the monotony.

  • This is a great book. I needed it for one of my college classes.

  • good text book
