Retired Col. Larry Guarino was a POW for more than seven years. He told the story of his captivity in Vietnam in "A POW Story - 2801 Days in Hanoi. That book inspired so many people," said Evelyn Guarino, his wife of 71 years. The Indian Harbour Beach resident died of natural causes at the age of 92. (Photo: File photo). She said a young private once wrote her husband to say that after reading about what Guarino went through in prison, he was ashamed of himself for complaining about not having his family with him in Germany where he was serving. He was a wonderful man," Evelyn Guarino said. He had a great sense of humor.

  • It is a very inspiring book! A middle-aged pilot downed over enemy territory, unaware that he will spend the next eight years in captivity. Besides his own survival he finds himself, as senior officer to be responsible for the welfare of other prisoners and has to make policies for their conduct under trying circumstances. I heard that Col. Guarino passed away last year in his eighties. He must have been one tough guy!

  • I have read this book twice. I am a Vietnam vet, and although I didn't have to go through such trials as Larry Guarino did, it sickens me to know about the suffering he had to endure for over 8 years. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!

  • The author is a personal friend. I am honored to know he and his family. Everyone needs to read this account of what a true hero lived through for his country.

  • I purchased this wonderful book for my son who has an avid interest in the POW experience. He just finished reading it and he loved it.
He said that he learned lots from the story and the man 'Larry Guarino's" lessons throughout the book. He found it very engaging and
read every day till he finished it just this past weekend.

  • A powerful book.....it should be mandatory reading for "millennials" to know what sacrifice and patriotism are!

  • A bit preachy, but a really good book.

  • Good quality! Fast shipping!

  • I am happy to order this book, as I lost my copy in a move. Larry was one of my dad's best friends. I remember visiting his wife in NJ after he was shot down. You see, my dad was a POW in WWII. He retired from the NJ guard when the Viet Nam war broke out, not wanting to repeat his experience. I read this book when I was quite young, and I was too upset to finish it, knowing Larry personally. Now that I am more "mature", I will be able to appreciate it. Can you imagine sitting in your living room and watching your best friend being dragged through the street in Viet Nam? Fortunately, my dad and Larry had many more years after his return home to enjoy their friendship. RIP Larry Guarino.
