You've probably heard of it, know it's some kind of ancient relic that supposedly bears the image of Christ. I liked the book because Wilson made it comprehensive. His chapters on the kind of artistic skill that any forger - medieval or otherwise - would have had to have to make the Shroud a fake are particularly interesting, and he faces the dilemma posed by radiocarbon dating in 1988 squarely, knowing that more than a few skeptics were swayed by (too confident) claims then made that the Shroud could.

Ian Wilson (born 1941) is the prolific author of historical and religious books. The Blood and the Shroud: New Evidence That the World's Most Sacred Relic Is Real, 1998. Life After Death: The Evidence, 1998. He has investigated such topics as the Shroud of Turin and life after death. He was born in Clapham, south London, during World War II. Neither of his parents was religious. His school was nominally Church of England, but during scripture classes he was always, as he put it, "the number one sceptic"  .

Wilson has penned two other defenses of the shroud (The Turin Shroud, 1978, and The Evidence of the Shroud, 1986), but both of those hooks were published before 1988, when scientists .

Wilson has penned two other defenses of the shroud (The Turin Shroud, 1978, and The Evidence of the Shroud, 1986), but both of those hooks were published before 1988, when scientists determined through radiocarbon dating that the shroud was made from 14th-century linen and so could not be Jesus' burial clothing. After a decade of reformulating his theory, Wilson is back, as vociferous as ever.

Rather, he asserts that it is possible that the Shroud is real, and gives some very compelling evidence in support of this assertion. Wilson gives a great deal of time to Shroud skpetics. There are few books where such fair argument is given, without being entirely self-defeating.

The discussion of the Turin shroud and the literary industry that surrounds it is a subject that attracts muc sceptical attention. However, Wilson's detailed account of the story of the shroud and the numerous attempts to ascertain the truth of its origins covers all the major areas of controversy and is compelling even for non-believers.
  • Wilson is unflinchingly fair and balanced in his treatment of the subject, considering all the theories and facts. He is also honest in relating his own inclinations and hopes on the subject, something every author should do at the outset, instead of the usual pretense of indifference.

Unlike many self-styled "skeptics" of today, who boast of their "skepticism" on the internet, Wilson is a true skeptic. He is skeptical of everyone, even himself. Today's "skeptic" is usually locked into a rigid, dogmatic point of view, which acts as a fact-filter - facts which don't fit are ignored. Wilson returns to the true old-world skepticism.

The weakness of most books on the subject is the tendency to pick and choose facts, to ignore those pieces which don't fit the authors' wishes. This kind of dishonesty seems to be absent here. Wilson lays out the evidence for us to decide, giving his own reasons for not being able to "see" the shroud as a forgery.

In the end, he does not have enough faith to believe that it is the product of some unknown genius endowed with knowledge and technology centuries ahead of his time, driven to produce a work that could not be appreciated until the invention of photography, a work that cannot even be duplicated today, despite claims to the contrary. A "cunning painting"? Try it yourself, reproducing all the characteristics of the Shroud, most notably the absence of any traces of paint application. Scorching? Good luck.

Consider yourself a skeptic? Read this book. Read other books. Look at Barry Schwortz's site, which provides papers for and against. Don't take the easy road. Think for yourself (Barry, of the Jewish faith, considers the Shroud to be genuine, I think). The path of a true skeptic is not an easy one. But it's the most rewarding!

  • Great service and delivery. Blood and Shroud is another book on the Shroud of Jesus subject. A good author & presentation and his viewpoint.
Was this actually Jesus. You buy the book and decide for yourself.

  • This is probably one of the most comprehensive and best written accounts of the Shroud of Turin that is in print today. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who wants to develop a good understanding of the importance of this relic which is probably the greatest unsolved mystery in the world today. Ian puts that great question once again front and center – is Jesus Christ the Son of God?

  • A very interesting up date to the question. A Great book.

  • Very interesting was pleased to have had the privilege in fact got one other for family! Susan

  • Perfect

  • I read the original hard cover edition of this book and state here and now that it is one of the best books ever written on the Shroud of Turin. I haven't read them all, but this is an amazing book. The possible explanation as to why the carbon-dating put the date of the Shroud from 1260 to 1390 has since been explained. One of the original scientists who examined the Shroud in 1978, Ray Rogers, who had been one of the leading proponents that the cloth was of Medieval creation changed his mind before he died in 2005, after new evidence was brought to his attention. He concluded that the 1988 Carbon 14 testing was correct, but that the piece of cloth that was tested was actually a later repair that was ingeniously was rewoven onto the Shroud. It was an old technique known as French reweaving. He proved that the piece was made of cotton and not linen as was the rest of the Shroud. Of course, Wilson did not know about this at the time he wrote his book.

I especially like the chapter that proves that the Shroud was known of and in existence long before the supposed time that the erroneous carbon dating "proves" it was created. Using various sources, Wilson takes backwards from today back through history to show the journey the Shroud made.

For the unbelievers and skeptics the book is a disaster. Science is on the side of the Shroud being real. Barrie Schwortz, who is Jewish, believes that the Shroud is authentic and is an image of Jesus because although others were crucified, their is only one known individual who was adorned with a "crown of thorns."

Although, Wilson obviously believes that Shroud to be a real relic, frankly, the evidence is overwhelmingly shouting from the rooftops that this is the only explanation.

There is no way for scientists today to create an item that has all the same characteristics that the Shroud does. The Shroud of Turin is truly the most important and amazing object that is known to exist. People just asserting that it is a forgery doesn't hold water because all its magnificent properties are impossible to duplicate.

This is truly an amazing book that is well written and well researched.
