  • It is very typical with regards to atlases or references that cram thousands of years of info. into a few hundred pages. Not very detailed yet still offers some organized and therefore understandable summaries of important periods. Probably best for high-schoolers but a well-read adult could still appreciate the format.

  • You get what you ask for. You want a short history, it's a short history. I like how the author has broken chapters down into timeline sections (usually around 300-500 year blocks) and geographically or by dominant civilization era i.e. Classical Greece. Detail is limited leaving you wanting more. When you read, "such and such civilization suffered for the next 300 years due to poor leadership or infighting," you wonder "who's poor leadership and what did they do wrong?" However each chapter has at least one small informational insert of interest along with a couple of photos or paintings. But in general you are looking at minimal detail here. This is best used as a reference book. Interested in a certain geographical area or time frame? Look it up here and that will steer you toward names, places, times that you can further research in depth elsewhere. But all in all, the author does well covering a significant subject and a good book to keep handy when you want to know "what happened and when."

  • It is what it says it is. Super sped up general history of humanity. It could really use a map in each section.
