Photographers Rob Lewis and Ryan Young have embarked on a journey to discover the amusement parks of the past in this delightful and unprecedented collection of images. Rhode Island Amusement Parks brings back the memories of a time less complicated than the present, when a sense of family held communities together. View the parks that provided a recreational outlet for so many Rhode Island families and the visitors who frequented them. Rhode Islanders were once able to enjoy amusement parks without traveling far; the state was home to several ocean front parks as early as the mid-18th century, with some of them surviving into the late 19th century.

Scenes from several neighboring Massachusetts amusement parks are also pictured. The images in this collection are from two large private archives as well as treasured family collections. Special highlights include photographs of hand-operated rides of the 1800s and views of President Taft’s plane, which landed at Sandy Beach.

An amusement park is an outdoor area with games, rides and shows. They are spread over a large area, often many square kilometers. Young and old visitors can enjoy many types of attractions. They can ride on roller coasters, go high up in the air in a Ferris wheel or ride on carousels. Amusement parks also offer restaurants and bars to eat and drink, as well as green areas with grass to sit down or relax. Most amusement parks have a fixed location. Some of them are open all year round, others only during the warmer season. Today amusement parks have been replaced by theme parks

  • Great book for anyone from Rhode Island. It is very nostalgic.

  • As a former New England resident I was able to visit three of these wonderful old amusement parks before they were bulldozed. This book tells the story and history of America's oldest amusement parks. My fovorate was Rocky Point Park of Rhode Island, the SECOND oldest amusement park in America. Rocky Point had a good run, opend in 1847 and lost to economic changes in 1995. The first Presidential telephone call was placed at Rocky Point by President, Rutherford B. Hayes to Alexander Grahm Bell in Providence. George M. Cohen first performed "Yankee Doodle Dandy" at Rocky Point. The Three Stoogies made many appearances at Rocky Point. These amusment parks were invented by the Trolley Companies. They built the parks on Trolley Routes to promote their services and boost ridership. The parks were originally called "Trolley Parks" and most major cities had them. Coney Island got it's start from a Trolley Service in New York. This book also contains many old photographs of the New England parks. An awsome read about some historical old amusement parks, great book!

  • Great Product

  • This book is great because it contains tons of photos spanning the complete history of Crescent Park in Riverside, Rhode Island. It has become a treasured heirloom because most of my family (McCuskers, Phillips, and Martin's) grew up working at the park. Even though I wasn't around during the parks hayday, having been born in the mid-1970's, stories about the park still fascinate me to this day.
