Mike resolved to breed a wildcat family and prepare them for a return to the wild. In the years that followed little of the scant scientific theory on wildcat behaviour was borne out by his careful observations. Mike's extraordinary adventures in raising and releasing no fewer than three litters, two pure wildcat and one hybrid from a domestic male gone wild, are full of incident, at times hilarious, and deeply moving.

Mike Tomkies (25 May 1928 – 6 October 2016), known as The Wilderness Man, was a British author covering subjects such as natural history, biography and fiction.

Gentle Wilderness was released as a private press LP in 1978. Michael Cottone Beautiful becalmed solo acoustic record. Huge thanks to Tompkins Square for unearthing this as well as Rick's debut

Gentle Wilderness was released as a private press LP in 1978. River Sun River Moon consists of previously unreleased recordings from the same time period. Deitrick came to our attention via Brooks Rice and Michael Klausman, who compiled Imaginational Anthem Vol 8 : The Private Press, which features Rick's "Missy Christa" from Gentle Wilderness. Huge thanks to Tompkins Square for unearthing this as well as Rick's debut. Love the way he plays with open strings in standard tuning.

Born in 1928, he grew up to serve in the Coldstream Guards where he competed as an army athlete and saw active service in Palestine.

  • During the years he spent in the Scottish wilderness, Tomkies acquired a series of Scottish wildcats, first two female kittens that were abandoned by their mother, then an adult male from a London zoo, and finally two kittens from a mating of one of the original kittens with the male. Throughout the book, Tomkies intermingles stories of his life in the wild and his cats with a broader discussion of the biology of the Scottish wildcat. Tomkies, a remarkably independent sort, clearly identifies with his charges and his work brings this rarest of felines to life and encourages Mittyesque escapes into the Scottish wilds. This book is recommended for those who like first-person stories of the wilderness, highly recommended for those interested in the wilds of Scotland and absolutely essentially for those interested in the Scottish wildcat.
