Sir Glanmor Williams CBE FBA (5 May 1920 – 24 February 2005) was one of Wales's most eminent historians. Sir Glanmor was born in Dowlais, into a working-class family, and was educated at Cyfarthfa Grammar School. He studied at Aberystwyth alongside Alun Lewis and Emyr Humphreys, becoming a specialist in the early modern period of Welsh history

Glanmor Williams, historian: born Dowlais, Glamorgan 5 May 1920; Assistant Lecturer in History, University College, Swansea 1945-52, Senior Lecturer 1952-57, Professor of History 1957-82 (Emeritus), Vice-Principal 1975-78; FSA 1979; CBE 1981; Chairman, Ancient Monuments Board (Wales) 1983-95; Chairman, Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments in Wales 1986-90; FB. His magnum opus was The Welsh Church from Conquest to Reformation (1962), which dealt with the evolution of the Church in the two and a half centuries that followed the Edwardian conquest of Wales in 1282.
