In this book Jon Guttman examines the fascinating story of the design and development of these deadly foes. First-hand accounts and innovative cockpit-view artwork give a thrilling insight into the pilots' experiences during the world's first aerial duels and explain their successes and failures.
  • I'm very pleased with this book. My primary interest when buying it was the Fokker Triplane. This author puts the triplane into its context of time and place. He reveals and explains the shortcomings of not only the triplane, but of the Camel too. Neither one could run from a fight (too slow), and both were unkind to timid pilots. But they were the aircraft on the front at the time and their pilots pushed them to their limits. A few pilots on both sides learned these machines so well that they preferred them over subsequent, supposedly superior, models. The book highlights a few of these pilots and tells their stories.
    Well worth the money and I would not hesitate to buy it again if I lost my copy.

  • I liked it so much that I bought the two Jim Laurier Aviation Art Prints that are seen on the cover!!

  • Okay book. None of this series has been especially useful in making me a better "pilot" in "Rise of Flight" but I won't give up on the Sopwith. This book helps in comparing the two planes but the Dr I was (like the Camel) a plane that skillful pilot could turn incredibly quickly. Some of WW2 "Duel" series give one more in terms of tactics. As an example, the "Bf (or ME) 110 versus the Lancaster" illustrates the problem faced by the 110 pilots because their top speed was only marginally faster than the Lancaster. Hence, the development of the idea of getting into the "bomber stream." The book does have a lot of illustrations and history of the two aircraft in combat. Of course, the most famous encounter was when Manfred von Richthofen was killed during combat with Camels. Was he killed by ground fire or Brown flying a Camel?

    Also, unlike the planes of WW2, we do not have detailed test pilot descriptions of performance. There is nothing comparable to "Wings of Luftwaffe" by Captain Eric Brown.

  • As one of my favorite series Duel hardly ever disappoint. This book is no different. It covers the two aircraft very well and the first hand hand accounts allows the reader to understand what the early aviators felt at the time.

  • This is a nice little comparative analysis of the Sopwith Camel and Fokker Triplane. The book purports to cover Design and Development; Technical Specifications; a history lesson covering the background of WWI when the aircraft flew and some of the pilots that flew them; and a section entitlted "Combat". There are some tidbits in this book you won't find elsewhere in other recently published WWI books. The layout is in a single column with lots of black and white period photos. That said, this book is more of a survey rather than an in depth study of the two aircraft. If you are relatively new to this period, looking for an easily digestible discussion of the relative merits of the two aircraft, this is the book you are looking for.

  • These short books, by their nature, are a mile wide and an inch deep. The illustrations are excellent w/ the - too me - exception of the inclusion of a two page oil painting that is poorly rendered. The "book" would have been better served by the inclusion of another two pages of text and/or pictures.

    Pros: The author knows his material, the cover, three views, cockpits are excellent and the chronology is helpful. The pictures are a good mix of the familiar and rare.

    Cons: Too short and the material presented only scratched the surface as a result.
