This fascinating book tells the story of the planes and pilots who fought for air supremacy over Korea from June 1950 through July 1953. Some of battle recaps are amazing. After reading this book, I called Robert Jackson in England to thank him for writing it. It is an outstanding source for air war historians, and Mr. Jackson obviously did his homework!

The fog of war leads to all sorts of claims and counterclaims. Over time as military historians are able to get their hands on declassified war records from all sides involved, we get a more realistic picture of what really happened. The 1950-53 Korean War was unique because most of the aerial combat was between Russian and American pilots rather than among the Koreans.

Book by Jackson, Robert
  • This is a venerable (published in 1973) but highly valuable primer on the air war that took place over Korea. Author Robert Jackson has assembled an authoritative text illustrated with terrific archival black and white photos to illuminate this epic chapter in aviation history which saw propeller driven aircraft gradually replaced by the first jet aircraft. The MiG-15 and F-86 Sabre jets have always garnered aviation enthusiasts attention but this volume also gives attention to other aircraft such as the F-51 Mustang (formerly P-51 of WWII fame) and the F4U Corsair which carried out vital ground support missions. Navy Panthers, Banshees, and Skyraiders, as well as the mighty B-29 Superfortress bombers also receive their due. Indeed, this is a story of men and courage as well as technology! The strategy and tactics are examined as they played out over the course of the "confrontation between east and west". Of particular value in this 175 page book are the appendices of "The Korean Aces", an all branch of service and nations-encompassing list of aviators that earned ace status as well as other notable pilots that claimed kills and orders of battle, and statistics. A list of helpful abbreviations and a bibliography are provided but unfortunately, no index. Recommended. Note: I'm sure there is a logical explanation for a glaring error the author committed within the first sentence of his Introduction on page 6 when he writes, "In November 1943, Prime Minister Winston Churchill, President Theodore Roosevelt and Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek met in Cairo to thrash out plans for the re-shaping of the Far East after Japan's defeat." Obviously, he means Franklin Delano Roosevelt instead of Theodore. The rest of the text is fine, I believe.

  • Real good book 2nd or 3 Rd time reading it
