Lady's Men : The Story of World War II's Mystery Bomber and Her Crew. By (author) Mario Martinez.

  • I remember a made for TV movie from my childhood called "Sole Survivor" in which the ghost of the crew of a B-25 bomber haunt the aircrafts crash site in the middle of the Libyan Desert. That movie haunted me and has stayed with me all these years. I'm sure it was inspired by the story of the "Lady Be Good" and her crew.

When I saw this book I jumped on it, thinking of that movie that's stayed with me for so long and the book ended up haunting me much more than the movie had because the book is true, it's about real men put into a horrible situation that they were simply unable to escape. This isn't a book about the war, or about the B-24 bomber and it's role in the war, this is a book about a bunch of oridnary guys who, when confronted with a terrible reality accomplished something incredible. Thier one and only mission of the war was an abject failure but, they ended up being heroes anyway, in a manner that will stay with you long after you've finished reading "Lady's Men".

At the end of "Sole Survivor" one crew member appears about to be left behind because his body isn't found. In the real story the bodies of all but one of the crew of the "Lady be Good" are found and brought home. One is still out there in the desert, alone, probably never to be found. And that haunts me most of all.

This is a great read, wether you're interested in World War Two or not, wether your interested in aviation or not, it's a story about the strength of the human spirit, about how reluctantly it goes into that good night. This story will stay with you long after the book is collecting dust on your bookshelf.

  • I could not put this book down, how these very brave young men lasted so long without a proper supply of water and walked so far in the desert i just do not know.
Very interesting but also very sad.
    God bless their souls.

  • Have always been interested in this, since reading about this in 1959.What a story.

  • The story of Lady be Good is remarkable but when you buy this book you also realise that it is of limited scope. This book contains so much padding and speculation that it becomes annoying. Not well written and with poorly produced photographs.

  • Very interesting . Mario Martinez provide us with new information about the LBG disappearance and finding . I would give a five stars if it wasn't a poor paper quality book . But the content is very very good .

  • The detail gathered to tell the tragic story of how these very young men faced death each day is beyond belief. I was involved in this during the end of WWII when injured airmen came to our hospital for treatment. Brave and courageous men.

  • excellent actual information, but, the author is /was definately overboard on his tripe religous dogma...ruined an otherwise good read
