A man who was once licensed to kill, and in 1995 is qualifying to be a barrister, tells his story of a life in the Paras, the South African Special Forces, the SAS and the RUC. Harry McCallion left school at 16 with no qualifications. His father was a Glasgow gangster. He joined the Paras and served for seven years with six tours in Ulster. Then came two years with the South African Special Forces during which he and a small group attempted to assassinate Robert Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo. Six years with the SAS, which included the Falklands conflict, and two tours with the anti-terrorist team in Ulster, were followed by six years in the RUC. At the end McCallion nearly died in a car crash, left the RUC, completed a law degree and in 1995 is studying to become a barrister at the London Bar.
  • A good read for 75% of the book, tailling off in the last quarter. A warrior's story, from an early age Harry trained and became a professional soldier excelling in various special forces around the world. While some years were spent in the war in Southern Africa, mixing it in a combination of the then Rhodesia and South Africa, the bulk of his career ended up fighting a vicious war in Northern Ireland. Rare indeed that a man focussed on only war and living that life from such a young age not only survives but in later life transitions to a life of law. A remarkable life indeed.

  • This is an interesting and well written autobiography. Some people have packed a lot into their lives and this author is one of them. I found his thoughts about a number of situations in which he participated to be insightful and coherent. Recommended as a much better than average read for books of this type.

  • I couldn't stop reading this book. The military action is very interesting and informative. What makes this book stand out is the author's drive to improve himself both professsionally and as a human being. It wasn't until I was an adult that I came to appreciate my mother's story, which was much like his childhood. My knowledge of the obstacles she had to overcome made me admire Mr. McCallion for his tenacity. A bonus at the end is reading of his bond with his Doberman, as I trained and trialed Dobermans for over 35 years.

  • Sadly society needs hard men to allow the rest of us to live in peace. This story speaks to that. It also enlightened me about the horrors that went on in Ireland. I had no idea it was like that. Terrible. Well written and engaging.

  • Superb tale of individual and group accomplishment and bravery. A stirring personal tale of combat in the face of difficult challenge.

  • McCallion ran the gauntlet of severe military training, war and police work in some of the most god forsaken locations in the world! He survived to write about it. Reading this autobiography makes you wonder how any human could have survived so much violence and still be sane! I guess only he knows for sure!

  • What a life and what a story!.. Inspirationen!
