The reasonable man may find it harder than he imagines to dismiss the Shroud of Turin after reading this book. James C. O'Neill,National Catholic News Service.

The historical records for the Shroud of Turin can be separated into two time periods: before 1390 and from 1390 to the present. The period until 1390 is subject to debate and controversy among historians. Prior to the 14th century there are some allegedly congruent but controversial references such as the Pray Codex. It is often mentioned that the first certain historical record dates from 1353 or 1357.

The Shroud of Turin has attracted controversy and argument since its first appearance in western Europe in the mid-14th . Part of the author’s approach in the book is to compare the Shroud images with medieval depictions of the crucified Christ.

The Shroud of Turin has attracted controversy and argument since its first appearance in western Europe in the mid-14th century. Some have responded to the faint, full-length images of a man on the linen cloth by believing that the cloth is the burial shroud of Christ, and that the images are a miraculous sign of the flesh-and-blood resurrection of Christ. Others have condemned it as a fake. De Wesselow concludes that it is impossible – because of the way that the Shroud images look – that the Shroud could have been faked in the medieval period.

  • Great book,very well written

  • Well written and interesting. However, as I read this book about the Shroud, I am continually disappointed that there are no of images of the actual shroud itself. I find myself wishing I could look at the area of the image the author is talking about. Of the 16 pages of color plates, only one contained an actual shroud image! And that only of the face (a duplicate of the front cover.) The other color plates are of the scientists and inspired artwork. There are other images of sections of the shroud in the book but only black and white low resolution. If you want views of the shroud, you won't find them here. A book about such a unique image that calls itself "illustrated" should have actual images to view!
