This book explores anti-Chalcedonian asceticism in Palestine, an area that has so far been relatively neglected in academic studies. Anti-Chalcedonian asceticism in Palestine is significant because it was in Jerusalem in the middle of the 5th century that monks who opposed the Council of Chalcedon first attempted to establish a dissenting anti-Chalcedonian ecclesiastical hierarchy. The monk Peter the Iberian, in particular, was a key force in this project because of his high-level political connections to the members of the imperial court in Constantinople.

Cornelia Horn presents a historical-critical study of the only substantial anti-Chalcedonian witness to the history of the conflict in Palestine andanalyses the formative period of fifth-century anti-Chalcedonian hierarchy, theology, and its ascetic expression. Important themes are pilgrimage as an ascetic ideal and asceticism as source of theological authority. Archaeological data on many places in the Levant and textual sources in Syriac,Coptic, Greek, Armenian, and Georgian are examined.

In this sweeping study, Cornelia Horn uncovers the struggles and aspirations of the anti-Chalcedonian Christians of Palestine in the pivotal century following the controversial fourth ecumenical council in 451. Using as her focal point the colorful figure of Peter the Iberian, the Georgian prince turned ascetic bishop and anti-Chalcedonian activist, Horn draws upon rich hagiographical traditions to explore the complexities of ecclesiastical and ideological dispute.
