Fraser's book offers more and better illustrations and covers far more films. Past Imperfect provides greater depth and analysis so if you're interested in history and film, the two titles complement each other.

An extensively illustrated, authoritative survey traces the history, rites, traditions, art and literature of Jewish existence throughout Europe since the first century, emphasizing the contribution of Jews to the culture of a Europe that often rejected them.
  • This book helped me to gain a greater understanding of the suffering of Jews in Europe, especially during the Middle Ages. I also found the photographs to be fascinating and enlightening. The information from this book sharpened a chapter that I was writing for a seventh grade textbook. Hopefully others will enjoy this book as I have.

  • "The Jews and Europe, 2000 Years of History" is a large, glossy, 10"x12" heavily illustrated book.

This book was divided into four major sections: history, languages, art, and customs. It would be a good book for a nice Jewish family to put on their coffee table, but not actually to read.

There were major problems regarding the history presented in this book. There were significant omissions regarding the medieval Khazar kingdom and the Bolshevik takeover of Russia. Also, many statements in the history section were almost immediately refuted by subsequent admissions.

The book proclaims, "of great importance in English are the works of the Hungarian-born Jew Arthur Koestler, novelist, essayist, and author of books on philosophy and politics."

But, after lauding Koestler, the authors ignore what he wrote. This book tells us that Eastern Europe was a destination for Sephardim Jews migrating eastward from Spain by way of Germany. However, according to Koestler's "The Thirteenth Tribe" that is backward. The Jews of Eastern Europe were probably Ashkenazim moving westward from Russia.

For some reason, this book offered nothing about the mystic Cabala, which is part of Orthodox Judaism.

  • I had a project to do for school on Jewish Liberation in the nineteenth century. While this book does not go too into depth on much of anything, it is a useful starting place for research projects. It is easy to read and has a lot of pictures.
