  • Great American Carousel is a book about carousels in general and different aspects of them. The author Tobin Fraley's grandparents owned an amusement park in Seattle Washington, so his interest and exposure to carousels started early. He describes the history of carousels as far back as you can go, also describing some of the most well known wood carvers of the United States and the companies they worked for. Lots of pictures in the book, both black and white and color. Of particular interest to me was what the author described as a regular working day for a wood carver and the rest of the men working on different aspects of what led up to a working carousel animal. It is nice to know that some carousels are being restored, also some individual animals are being restored and collected by interested people. In the last 20 - 30 years groups have sprung up about restoring carousels and also about making some reproduction animals. A fascinating book about a lost art that is being found again.

  • There are several books out on carousel history and each has their own view point on the its history. This one is informative with many very nice color and black and white photo's. If you love carousels this would be nice to add to your collection.

  • This was a lovely book, and Tobin Fraley is one of the more knowledgeable folks out there. If you love carousels, this is a great title!

  • Great book.

  • As a lover of carousels, history, and books, I was captivated by Tobin Fraley's presentation of American carousel art. This book is lovely to look at, richly illustrated with all kinds of carousel animal photographs as well as historical photos and memorabilia about carousels and carousel carvers. I liked how the book was divided, chronologically outlining carousel manufacturers and master carvers. Each carver had a different style ("the eyes of a Zalar horse always have a certain sadness to them" and"Charles Carmel captured a whimsical element that no other carver could match.") and this book does a great job of showing off these masters' beautiful work and individuality. If you're looking for a book that visually captures the fantasy and beauty of carousel animals while providing a highly interesting dose of American history, this book is for you.
