Patterns were a bit difficult for intermediate. Color info could have been more expansive. All in all, an OK book but not great. McDowell takes traditional blocks, and layers and overlaps them, using color transparency, to create different depths and images

Patterns were a bit difficult for intermediate. McDowell takes traditional blocks, and layers and overlaps them, using color transparency, to create different depths and images. The depth and complexity is extraordinary; the templates and color charts are very helpful; and the author tells of the inspiration for each quilted wall hanging. You can choose to reproduce one of McDowell's offerings, or strike out on your own.

  • This woman is brilliant. I am so sorry that I did not get to take a class with her before she retired. This is not a quilting book per se, more of an art book. It informs how to design a quilt. A must for hard core quilt designers.

  • Nice product!

  • Patterns were a bit difficult for intermediate. Color info could have been more expansive. All in all, an OK book but not great

  • GREAT

  • lots of helpful info for taking "old patterns" and creating new ones that look very complicated! Good book to add to your library

  • Just what she wanted

  • NO NO NO NO NO. I got this as a bundle and was excited to get another Ruth book; I have several others, and LOVE the piecing primer especially.

These quilts must have been designed early in her career before she developed her eye for layering and color. She takes a classic design and re-colors parts of it to make it look as though there is an overlay, creating a secondary complementary design. The idea is sound but the quilts are simply terrible. The compositions are dark, muddy, unfocused, and just plain ugly in some cases. It's often hard to separate the secondary design from the primary, and the color combinations are hideous IMO. The cover quilt is not as bad as some of the others but I would not make it either.

Possibly some intrepid soul could take the idea to a happier place, but that's not me. I do hate that I did not like it, as her other books are inspired and inspiring.
