  • Have been a follower of illustrator Aaron Johnson's 'What the Duck' online comic strip for a couple years now. As one behind the camera so often, find his illustrations to portray the world of photography as we often find them... and with a sense of humor.

What the Duck is a W.T. Duck collection in 128 pages, perhaps the best of the best by Aaron Johnson, at least up to 2009 when the book was first published. It gave this reader a chance to catch up on all if the original WTD cartoon strips that were missed from before, and in the frequently used three-panel illustrations, we meet all of the regular characters still found today in this clever and also sometimes sarcastic strip.

We also meet the heroic, the romantic and the idiotic. We find what the camera sees, what the photographer sees, and what the subject sees. We even find what the lens cap sees. We find such wisdom as in photography, size matters, and photographers make it last longer. And yes, there is a Duck U School of Photography.

Then there are the occasional indisputable facts: "Photoshop: Helping the ugly since 1996."

What the Duck is printed in full color on good paper stock. For this reader it's a guilty pleasure in print, and sits in a place of honor, safe next to my prized Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Zoom coffee mug. This one is also a great idea for that photographer who has everything on your gift list.

And remember, as WTD says: "If It Ain't Bokeh, Don't Fix It."

  • The "What the Duck" cartoons are very funny (for the most part - there are some misses) comics for people who are into photography. And the "What the Duck" plush toy is quite adorable too with its little camera hanging around its neck!

If you like Dilbert, and are also into photography, the tone & humor in these comics will likely appeal to you.

  • In fact, you may not need to read a review to consider buying this book. Just visit the site whattheduck.com and see for yourself if the type/dose of humor present appeals to you or not. Most of the jokes here evolve around a pro photographer and they are never lost on amateurs who might have considered becoming a pro for a moment. Dilbert, our photographer, has already become a classic. This book will certainly be a nice present for everybody shooting actively.

  • I saw this when I was skimming through Amazon to find a present for my boyfriend who is a photographer. I thought why not and ordered it on a whim. I'm glad I did. It has short little comic strips in it, and the majority are funny and cute. I enjoyed it and so did my boyfriend. I wouldn't have bought it if it cost more, but since it was cheap, I'm glad I bought it. Good for the price.

  • We purchased this book for our daughter's fiance who is a photographer. He said that he and our daughter both enjoyed the book's illustrations and humor.

  • I find many strips would apply to anyone in an entreprenurial field or creative profession, not just photographers. The author has a wry sense of humor that he shines on the foibles of creative types trying to get ahead or get recognition in a commercial world. Very cute.

  • I saw this advertised and thought I'd try it. It's likeable and has a focus on photography ( ha,ha). Buy it and see for yourself.

  • got it for a birthday gift. he loves it. he reads these online I think and wanted the book for his birthday.
