  • I'm a newbie to cryptics and this book was very helpful in teaching me to break down the clues and to think differently about what the clue is actually indicating. I liked that she included the standard crossword cluing, so that if you did get stuck, you could use that information to continue to attempt to solve the cryptic. Warning though, the book uses British spellings and abbreviations which could cause some frustrations for non-Brits. Although, her techniques do work with American cryptics as well.

  • I got this because my eight-year-old daughter is interested in doing cryptics, and I was looking for better examples to help her learn the different types of cryptic clues.

On the good side, the example clues at the beginning were sufficiently well described that my daughter was able to solve most of them fairly quickly after reading the description of how that type of clue worked, and the examples she worked helped her to recognize and solve those types of cryptic clues when doing crosswords.

On the bad side, at least one of the most common clue construction techniques wasn't explicitly addressed -- there was no discussion of charades.

For better or worse, there was no discussion of what makes a cryptic clue fair. It's very focused on practical aids, giving specific examples of the clue elements that have invented meaning specific to the cryptic crossword (for example, "Banker" for "river", so "Italian Banker" may be used to clue "po" in a charade) without the context of debates over what is fair. (Search for "Ximenean clueing" or "Ximenes" or "Ximenean clueing Alberich" for context here.) It can be useful to know whether to look for the more devious types of clues depending on the source of the puzzle.

So far, I haven't tried any of the included puzzles; this review is only of the introduction. So it's hardly a fair review...

  • I HAVE BEEN DOING CRYPTIC PUZZLES FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS OR SO. THE AUTHOR IS THE ONLY ONE YOU GIVES YOU A DETAILED INFO ON WHAT IS THE CORRECT ANSWER. I AM ABLE TO DO MORE OF A PUZZLE WITHOUT HAVING TO RESORT TO THE ANSWER KEY. MOST ANSWER KEYS DO NOT TELL YOU WHAT REVERSAL CONTAINER IS OR LEAD ON QUESTIONS. I LIKE THAT SHE HAS THE IMPORTANT WORD FOR EACH QUESTION BELOW THE PUZZLE QUESTION. I ALWAYS HAD A PROBLEM FIGURING OUT WHICH HOMOPHONE IS THE CORRECT ANSWER. WITH THE CHEAT LIST BELOW IT IS EASY. CYRPTIC PUZZLES SOLVING IS MADE BY ALWAYS SEEING HOW THEY GOT THE ANSWER. VERY GOOD LEARNING TOOL

  • very happy with product

  • At last, someone has taken the time to explain how to do cryptic crosswords. I am not talking about "the rules" (that are also included in this book) but the answers. Barbara Gettinby explains every answer. She gives you both the cryptic clue and the straight clue. If you still can't work out the answer, look at the solution in the back of the book.

Thank you, Barbara. I really appreciate your efforts!

  • If you have a passion for crosswords, but don't know how to do cryptic crosswords, this is book for you.
Barbara consolidates her decades of experience into this well constructed book. With the straight clues and cryptic clues for each crossword on the same page, and the easy reference to the types of cryptics at the start of the book, I am on a "fastpath" in learning a new hobby. The solutions at the back of the book are educational and understandable. Thanks Barbara!
