Tesujis are the tactics of short-range combat in the game of go. This book presents over 300 examples and problems of them, aimed at training the reader to analyze and spot the right move in all sorts of tactical situations. Its problems manage to be both hard enough to challenge and easy enough to solve, and there are enough of them to keep the most avid busy.

Tesuji has a section where Davies describes how to read. No earth-shattering insights, just hard work. It would be like reading a diet book that says, okay this is critical: eat less and exercise more. I've heard people say that L&D is too easy and Tesuji is too hard, but I think both books have problems of a wide variety of levels.

This one is by James Davies, the author of Life and Death (which is volume 4).

Kiseido Publishing Company, 26 Nis 2017 - 198 sayfa. James Davies was born in 1945 in Philadelphia. He studied mathematics at Oberlin College and the University of Washington, but in 1970 the game of go drew him to Japan, where he has lived since. An amateur (5-dan) player but a semi-professional writer, he has turned out numerous books and countless magazine articles on go.

Following the general pattern of its predecessor Tesuji, this book organizes over two hundred life-and-death problems and examples into thirty-six short chapters. The problems are grouped around common tesujis (throw-in, placement, et. and standard shapes (the one-, two-, and three-space notchers on the sides, the corner L groups, et. Akira Ishida & James Davies. It lays down a few clear principles, then goes through a wealth of applications: examples, problems, and case studies from professional play.

Tesujis are the tactics of short-range combat in the game of go. This book presents over 300 examples and problems of them, aimed at training the reader to analyze and spot the right move in all sorts of tactical situations. It covers a wide range of material while concentrating on fundamentals. Its problems manage to be both hard enough to challenge and easy enough to solve, and there are enough of them to keep the most avid busy.
  • I've tried to learn tesujis from online go problem sites, but without further explanations I hadn't been able to apply them to my games. This book has not only opened my eyes to moves I wouldn't have considered, but it showed me when such moves are applicable.

The book divides the tesuji into chapters on when to apply them, not just how they work. (Example: Chapter 2 is "Capture the Cutting Stones," Chapter 13 is "Making Shape") This format has been great for me to learn and I've been able to use these in my games.

Each chapter ends with problems based on what was taught, so the book can also be useful for doing go problems on its own. Some problems are quite basic, but others definitely require time to read.

I would recommend this book to players around 5-15 kyu.

  • Tesuji are clever and often unintuitive moves which will increase a player's skill and rating

  • If you want to improve your reading, no matter your skill level, this is the book for you. The remarkable and endless subtleties of the game will open up before your eyes as you work through the exercises.

  • I am a 7kyu KGS/AGA (ranks are roughly the same) and recently bought and read this book. It took me about 6 hours to read/do all the problems but someone around 12kyu would probably take 8 to 10 hours. I believe reading it improved my play by about 1/2 of a stone but would improve a 12kyu by a full stone or possibly 2 stones.

Reading through it at 7kyu, I found the problems good, though possibly on the easy side, and rarely needed to read the hints or explanations. The goal of each problem (such as "black to cut the white stones") is always amongst the 2 to 5 sentences of explanation which makes reading the book slightly annoying in sections I understand well (would be nice if the problem statement was also be below each board image).

If you are in the 8kyu - 13kyu range you should definitely get this book as I believe it is the most efficient time per rank improvement book you can get. If you in the 5kyu - 8kyu range it will still improve your play enough to be worthwhile (though a lot will be solidifying ideas you already know).

Unlike a couple of the other reviews on here, I would not suggest starting this book if you are between 13kyu and 30kyu. I help new players in my local club, and feel reasonably well qualified when I say the ideal range is 5kyu-13kyu. I often see newer players trying to read books slightly beyond what they can understand, thinking it will help them get better faster - it only ends up giving them more headaches and frustration and makes the time spent reading to rank improvement ratio very bad! Even if a 17kyu can struggle and eventually understand the problems he/she will probably not be able to implement it in a game.

  • Right from the beginning of the book, you're already learning! I'm ranked an 18kyu and i just read the first 25 pages of the book and i've already learned so much more than i have from most of the books i've tried reading. This is a great buy, but may be a little hard for 20k or weaker ranked players.

  • It's wonderful.

  • Have worn shirt garters for over twenty years; but never used the snaps like this pair. They have been fantastic and so much easier to use!

  • Exercise?
