  • Delighted by the surprising collection of images and the analysis of how the mind perceives optical illusions.
    Highly recommended.

  • Great book that covers a wide range of different types of optical illusions.

  • Great book

  • One of my favorite things is Optical Illusions.I have a number ofbooks on them in my library.Optical Illusions fit right in with by interests na Mathematical Recreations , Puzzles of all types and Graphic Arts.I first got interested in Optical Illusions from the works of M.C.Escher the, famous Dutch artist, who created so much in the way of Impossible Art and Objects.Optical Illusions have been around, particularly in the form of drawings and pictures for a long time ;but Impossible Objects, not so much. However this has changed dramatically in recent years;and now there are many excellent books on the subject.
To do a helpful Review about this book;I'll try to compare it with some of my favorite books on the subject.
First let me say that this book and most others are exceptionally well constructed, using the best of paper, printing ,picture and illustration quality in both color and B & W.This book was published by Sterling and ,as always, they publish excellent quality in all their books that I've seen.It will withstand lots of use, both in schools, libraries and personal , even the soft cover editions.
Most books I have, generally cover some history and include a number of Optical Illusions that are classics such as the Rabbit/Duck (pg16),the All In Vanity portrait by Gilbert,1892 (pg 21),Impossible Triangles (pg 56-59),The Devil's Fork (pg 62), Never-ending Up/Down Stairs, (pg 64-65),After Iimages (pg 104-105),Camouflage &Mimicry (pg119-120)Tops-Turvey Illusions (pg140-143),etc.
What Robert Ausbourne, who is himself is a Designer with a degree in Technical Illustration and Art History does, is cover the world of Optical Illusions, with photographs and illustrations of the various types of llusions, and in most cases with his own versions. His examples are excellent and even someone who is verry familiar with Optical Illusions and seen several books;will find Ausbourne's works refreshing and interesting. He also gives considerable information as to what makes these Illusions work.If you are new to this fascinating world of Optical Illusions ,or thinking of buying a book for yourself or someone else, this would be an excellent choice. The only area where this book falls a little short in in the Bibliography.I would suggest thebooks by authors Al Seckel,Sarcone & Waeber,Del Prete,,and of course M.C. Esher ,the master of Optical Illusions ,not even mentioned in the book.Should you want to learn about "Drawing Visual Illusions" check out that book by Natalie Sirett. Then again, the Net provides a virtual unlimited amount of information and examples, simply search "Optical Illusions".

  • Honestly, I've not seen a better book on Optical Illusions. It's not only visually exciting, featuring many superb illustrations by the author himself, but goes on to explain many aspects of the psychology and physiology of visual perception in a very straight forward and often entertaining way. A delight for both the eye and mind!
