Dog Law, By Mary Randolph is now in it's third publication, and I highly recommend it to all dog owners

Dog Law, By Mary Randolph is now in it's third publication, and I highly recommend it to all dog owners. Not only does the author focus on simple leash laws, barking cases, landlord restrictions, traveling with your dog, et. but the author also focuses on criminal abuse cases and acts as a referral contact if you need help in the legal process yourself with a dog legal situation. Dog Law gives a great overview of all sorts of legislation concerning dogs. Many owners know about general dog laws, like leash laws and curbing you dog, but Randolph covers much more. Things like dangerous dog laws, puppy lemon laws and laws concering veterinarians are covered.

So, while "dog law" varies every time you cross a city boundary, there are certain things to look for and expect. The local nature of dog law is usually an advantage when you're trying to find out the rules in your town.

America's estimated 50 million dogs are governed by laws. Completely updated to reflect the most recent legal changes, this revised third edition of a very helpful handbook answers common legal questions about biting, barking, veterinarians, leash laws, travel, landlords, wills, guide dogs, pit bulls, cruelty, and much more.
  • This book should be a must-read for every dog owner. It is a great reference, whether you are in the middle of a dispute or just want to mitigate potential issues.

I did not plan on reading cover-to-cover, but during a long wait at an auto dealership, I delved in. While a book like this cannot cover every piece of legislation for every municipality and every State, this book succeeds at giving you examples and references. While calling the police or filing a lawsuit in response to a dog issue may seem like the easy way, NOLO shows you all of the options you have at your disposal and in what order they should be applied.

Learn about: Licensing, leash laws, lost and found dogs, animal burial restrictions, sales agreements when buying, landlord liability, health insurance, veterinary malpractice, traveling with your dog, talking to your neighbors about barking dogs, Animal Control Authorities, small claims court, assistance dogs, when killing a dog is justified, when your pets outlive you, dog bites, and much more.

A practical, easy-to-read guide on the benefits, requirements, and liabilities of owning a dog.

  • All the info one needs to make an informed decision as a when to involve an attorney as owner or non-owner of a dog. In Maine there a few penal laws dealing with injury from dog bites as long the dog bites one on the owners property. But it is important to know what is possible civilly. A very informative and well-written book.

  • Still reading but good info.

  • This is a fantastic book that every dog owner should read!! It tells you how to protect yourself and your dog for legal issues, as well as how to find the specific answers in your local city/town/state.

  • This seller comes highly recommended, what an awesome book. It has taught me a lot I did not know about dog laws. The seller sold me this book as promised, I could not be more pleased!

  • This book is informative and a valuable asset for every dog owner. It contains valuable information, particularly for those who have a service dog and want to know the legal ramifications of such. The book is well worth the price.

  • If you are thinking about buying a dog (it explains puppy mills, contracts to consider when you buy a dog and licensing laws); you already have a dog (laws you might want to consider even if you're sure your dog is always well-behaved and how to get dog insurance); you want to provide for your dog after your death (what may or may not work in your will); you hate your neighbor's dog's barking (how to talk to your neighbor or seek mediation, or your liability if you are cruel or provoke the dog) or if you suspect your neighbor's dog is mistreated or are in any other way concerned about dogs: YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK. There is much more covered than what I have put here.
I expected to read a few key chapters, but ended up reading it cover to cover. It contains interesting facts throughout (have you ever thought about the number of dogs injured/killed by riding in the back of a pick-up truck?), history of dog laws, real cases and the rulings in those cases (though obviously missing the recent case of Ms. Whipple's murder); and sound, common-sense advice whether it is written in the law or not.
For the sake of the dogs and the people who own or are around them, I hope everybody will read this book.

  • Dog law is another outstanding legal book by Nolo press. I got the book because I was having problems with my neighbor's five barking dogs. I wanted to be informed of my rights before I confronted my neighbor. Although I had no luck coming to a compromise with my neighbor regarding the dogs (he is a crazy, paranoid, drug-addicted redneck), it was empowering to know my rights. The only small complaint was that it did not include state laws, but that may be beyond the scope of this book.
