  • I've been looking all over for this book! Very few DITA how-to books exist and the ones that do pale in comparison to this one. It did help that I struggled through "DITA Best Practices" and "DITA Style Guide" before reading this book. The author of "Practical DITA" does exactly what a technical writer should do -- speaks clearly and concisely and on the level of the audience. Thank God for this book. I didn't think I'd ever understand reuse strategies and conrefs and keys. If you are looking for a book to get you started in DITA, this is the one. If you start off reading the others, you'll be reading for a very long time. And best of all, he includes several examples of code in the Appendix. You won't find hardly any examples in the other books. That's one of the main reasons I bought this book.

  • Way too simplistic for writers with some DITA experience, and not a good footing for newbies.

  • You would think that a book about an authoring tool would well-written. Unfortunately, this book is not logically organised--I'm skipping back and forth constantly to accomplish a task. The book is also sloppily edited--so far I've found at least one glitch resulting in a nonsensical sentence.

DITAworks is not a terribly intuitive application. This book does little to rectify that, embracing the program's complexity rather than trying to make it more accessible to non-programmers. The author assumes a high level of familiarity with XML.

  • If you are wanting to learn how to actually use DITA mark-up, this book is not for you--look elsewhere.

Now, with that said, I found many very useful things in this book that will make me keep it near when I am working on a DITA project.

Practical DITA is intended to be a non-programmer's beginner book. It explains the concepts behind the DITA architecture VERY WELL. For example, the concepts of Topic types such as Task topics, Reference topics, Concept topics, etc. are explained very well. How everything fits together through maps is also explained very well. A small amount of markup is shown that is useful, but more markup examples and explanations of what they do would have been beneficial.

The single strongest area of the book is the detailed explanations of exactly how DITA content creation is designed, and how to benefit from content reuse (topic based authoring). This is the main reason someone should buy the book. It very clearly teaches how to plan and prepare your document, before you do any actual writing. This is very essential, because you have to analyze your audience, outline your project, and break everything it the necessary chunks that makes DITA such a beneficial single-source, multichannel open standard--and all of this before you even begin to code.

As for the price... Who can complain about such a reasonably priced document. The PDF file is less than $7. That's very reasonable!

Overall, I found it a very useful book, and would recommend it highly for the purposes I mentioned above.

  • I've been recommending Practical DITA to my clients and colleagues since the first edition. The title is appropriate because Julio Vazquez takes an "in the trenches" approach to explaining DITA and provides lots of examples. The examples are valuable and educational. This book is a must have for your DITA library.
