Home schooling is considered one of the fastest growing trends in the United States today. With over four million children being homeschooled, along with a 15- to- 20 percent yearly growth rate, many professional educators and school boards are concerned that this exodus will keep funds from entering the already diminishing public school system. But is home schooling better that the public school system? In this paper I will address key points to both public and home schools in regards to socialization and education.

Deschooling Society (1971) is a book that brought Ivan Illich to public attention. It is a critical discourse on education as practised in modern economies. For example he calls (in 1971) for the use of advanced technology to support "learning webs".

Schools have failed our individual needs, supporting false and misleading notions of 'progress' and development fostered by the belief that ever-increasing production, consumption and profit are proper yardsticks for measuring the quality of human life. Our universities have become recruiting centres for the personnel of the consumer society, certifying citizens for service, while at the same time disposing of those judged unfit for the competitive rat race
