  • This was the only one to get, per my French/English teacher friend. It replaced my two Larousses.

  • Better than anticapated. Thanks, Joseph

  • A much more user-friendly layout and presentation than was the case with the last edition I bought 20 years ago.

  • My husband is French & I am American. We are learning each others languages. After many dictionaries & frustration, the Collins Robert French/English Ditionary is truly the best no matter which side of the Atlantic you are on!

  • Good, easy to use,

  • It's essential to choose a dictionary that matches your language goals. Nobody is going to spend $90 on a two-volume bilingual dictionary unless they are serious about learning French, but who really needs this dictionary? Answer: This is the dictionary for educated native speakers of English who want to learn to use French the way an educated speaker of French would. It has a rich store of examples of usage, so you can make those essential distinctions between closely related meanings--do you want to say "she's fat", "she's filling out (from exercise)" or "she's pleasingly plump"? This is the only dictionary I know that will give you the information you need in order to make this kind of decision. It has a great grammar reference section. In addition, it has a unique section on how to express yourself in social situations: giving orders, gracefully making known your desires, giving condolences, courteously expressing disagreement, and showing approval, for example. As my French has improved in the course of the last 20+ years, this French-English dictionary has replaced all the others on my bookshelf. In a career where I now use French professionally and socially nearly every day, this has remained my first and favorite go-to resource for French. My only regret is that it isn't yet available for my Kindle!

  • I realize that this dictionary is expensive, but it's probably the best assest you can have for your french efforts. Each word is analyzed in context of certain sentences, so if you've seen a word used a certain way, it's very, very easy to find a translation. I used this dictionary the entire way through a 7-week no-english-allowed study in France, and I never had a single false quotation.
I think that another asset is the dictionary's liberal eye towards slang, rated in terms of familiarity/vulgarity, which is entirely unavoidable when you're using the language in a French-speaking country. There is also a center section full of extremely useful phrases rated once more in terms of formality. This version has more than 550,000 translations; I think you get what you pay for in the price.
The only knocks I could give this is that there is no distinction between Quebecois and native French; certain examples: "gosses" is only given as an informal way to say "kids," however, the word's usage in Quebec means "testicles." The dictionary does succeed, however, in differentiating between British English and American English.

  • I have a (much) older edition of this dictionary that I bought in 1992 when I took AP French Language in high school. I used it through AP French, college French (including literature courses), and still reference it regularly now as a French teacher. I have never come across another French-English dictionary I liked so well. There have only been a handful of occassions over the past 17 years when I have not been able to find something I needed to know in this dictionary. The entries are very detailed with many examples of usage so that you can be sure that you have the right word. It's expensive, but if you are a serious French student, you will get your money's worth out of it over the years. I wouldn't trade my copy for anything... except maybe a newer version!
