Using Italian Synonyms has been added to your Cart. this is possibly the most comprehensive volume of its kind. Its value lies not only in the fact that it provides far more information than will normally be found in a dictionary but also it is more useful to English-speaking students than existing collections of Italian synonyms.

The book, "Using Italian synonyms", differs from the traditional synonym dictionaries in various ways. One of the main differences is certainly the presence of some kind of metalinguistic information (that is, additional information about how to use a lexical item). Secondly, it is the presence of a wide array of lexical items.

This book enables students who have already developed a basic competence in Italian to broaden and improve their vocabulary and choose among words with similar meanings. It is the first book of Italian synonyms to be produced with the needs of English speakers in mind. All entries are accompanied by examples of usage and are graded to indicate their level of formality, and there are two indexes allowing users to locate words in Italian or English. This is an essential reference for intermediate and advanced students and teachers of Italian.
  • One cannot help but be frustrated by the dearth of good Italian reference works (beyond grammars) for the intermediate/advanced student. A text like this one is certainly needed and I would recommend its purchase simply for the fact that there is nothing better out there. But if has some problems. First off, the author's explanatory text of what distinguishes one Italian synonym from another is very skimpy, often times not providing enough for the English speaker to grasp the difference. For example, a sweater (pullover)listes 6 different synonyms. You really don't get a crisp grasp of the distinctions as presented (Compare this with K B Beaton's classic "Practical Dictionary of German Usage" which sets the standards for how this should be done). Every entry does have a sentence in Italian, but unfortunately the sentence is not translated. So unless your Italian is very proficient, you'll be bogged down looking up quite a few words. I understand that at 724 pages the authors made this compromise to keep the book at a reasonable size, but this certainly does impact the learner if he/she doesn't already speak decent Italian. In praise of this work, besides the many sentences, each word used in the text is indexed in the back so that you can find a particular entry quickly. So I wish the authors had spent more resources in clearly defining where each word would be used in Italian. But this book still belongs on the shelf of anyone who has an interest in acquiring an intermediate or higher proficiency in speaking the Italian language.

  • Fantastic for intermediate learners just as previously described by other reviewers. I would highly recommend this book. It gives you more info and perspective than English-Italian dictionaries. Also really like easy-to-read font size. Book is organized in a user friendly, non intimidating way.

  • I agree with one reviewer who said that this was lacking translations. It doesn't seem purposeful to me to create a synonym book without translating the examples provided.

That being said, I still think it is a good source. If you are looking for help in distinguishing or determining synonyms, this book is for you. I would say that this book is for intermediate/advanced students because of the lack of translations for the examples.

Also I also agree with that reviewer who said not enough distinctions were made between the examples used. Otherwise, this is a solid book and a good effort.
