Rene Descartes, French mathematician, scientist, and philosopher who has been called the father of modern philosophy

Rene Descartes, French mathematician, scientist, and philosopher who has been called the father of modern philosophy. He was among the first to abandon Scholastic Aristotelianism by formulating the first modern version of mind-body dualism and by applying an original system of methodical doubt. René Descartes was born in 1596 in La Hay en Touraine, France, to Joachim and Jeanne Descartes. Jeanne died shortly after Descartes turned one. Descartes was thought to have been fairly ill throughout his childhood. He and his siblings were raised by their grandmother, while Joachim was busy elsewhere with work and as a council member in the provincial parliament.

Providing a complete translation of Descartes's "Meditations on First Philosophy", this text has annotation tasks in the margins which invite students to underline key sentences, paraphrase main ideas, or supply original illustrative examples. Many of the exercises have been rewritten or revised for this edition. An expanded introduction gives a broad overview of the Renaissance, providing an historical and cultural context for Descartes's thinking, and critical-thinking exercises throughout the book aim to help students to review and check their comprehension of central concepts of the "Meditations". Brief selections from Anselm, Aquinas and Augustine highlight their arguments for the existence of God, and a section is dedicated to helping students to focus on writing assignments related to the "Meditations".
  • I appreciated the price of these books that were required in my class. They were not brand new but they served their purpose.

  • This is probably the best introduction to philosophy that anyone could hope for. Descartes is not hard to read or comprehend but this particular book is unusually helpful to the newcomer. The author tries to give the reader a good idea of what philosophy is about and how to read philsophical works. There are detailed questions that instruct the reader on how to "think like Descartes" and to construct logically sound arguments based upon minimal assumptions. An excellent introduction to philosophy and to critical thinking.

  • well put together and the outline of questions would be most beneficial to a young reader rather than an older reader.
