I am an English instructor of ESL students, many who are preparing for the Toefl exam. The Toefl test is difficult enough for ESL students, and I would NEVER recommend a book that makes the test literally impossible and so confusing. The Princeton books are so far, my top picks.

Choose Barron’s Method for TOEFL Success. Take a model test to discover your problems. Design your personal study plan for success. this book is good for English learners who wish to take TOEFL test

this book is good for English learners who wish to take TOEFL test. Mar 17, 2008 Shila rated it did not like it. haha, i was bored so i just started reading my mom's toefl books (there like to help you pass the toefl test to get a degree or qualification or something) and it was really boring. Nov 12, 2008 Hanin rated it it was amazing. Shelves: personal-building. I read this book, and took ELPT test. I got score of 600. I really get surprised myself.

This package of three audiocassettes are designed to supplement Barron's How to Prepare for the TOEFL Test, 11th Edition, a comprehensive test preparation manual for the Test of English as a Foreign Language. These tapes provide practice in listening comprehension and include the Listening Comprehension sections of all practice tests in the manual.
  • I am a professional TOEFL prep instructor. Here is my review:
    If you can only buy one book, this is the one.
    However, I would*not* recommend that you buy only this book--it is not enough. You need to buy at least two other titles as well--the official "TOEFL Kit" and the "PowerPrep TOEFL" software.
    First, this book does NOT have a computer test. Instead, it has some questions in the book that simulate the computer questions. Half of the tests are written for people who have to take the paper test, the other half are for people who have to take the computer test.
    If you can only buy one book, you need a review of grammar and other sections of the test, and you want some practice tests, this book is your best choice. It has a lot of grammar explanations and lots of practice questions.
    So, it is a great value--the price is low, and you get a lot of questions.
    However, the book is not perfect. Some of the questions are old, and you will not see those types on the
    TOEFL anymore. Furthermore, many of the questions are easier than the real TOEFL, especially the reading sections. Many of my students have said that the reading section is very, very hard and that they were not prepared for the real TOEFL when they took it.
    In short, if you can only buy one book, this one is okay, but you really should buy official TOEFL materials so that you will be ready for the real test when you take it.

  • 1)The problems in the book are very outdated. (for grammar section buy Cliff's or Longman)
    2)The problems in the book are less difficult than those on a real exam.
    3)The problems in the book were arranged in very boring manner.
    4)The CD-Rom is only for Listening. (for more computer practice buy Delta's Key for Toefl Test with CD, which has 10 tests or Cambridge Preparation for Toefl Test, which has 7 tests. Both books have CD-Rom simulated CBT.)
    5) The Essay section is fair. (for the best essay section buy Cambridge Preparation for the Toefl Test)
    Generally, there is no one book for the preparation for the TOEFL. Most likely you will need some combination of them.
    For instance,
    a) Delta for practice and reading. Moreover, you may wish to buy just Delta CD Rom without book and cassets for practice only;
    b)Cliff's or Longman for grammar;
    c)Cambridge for essay and for practice.
    Good luck!

  • I have been teaching ESL for 15 years, and Barron's How to Prepare for the TOEFL test is not only the best book for students planning to take the TOEFL, but also for intermediate level students who need to add structure to their learning of grammar, and develop their vocabulary. A very interesting text to work with.

  • I use this book in my advanced college ESL class. My students didn't have to take the TOEFL, so I thought I would use the exercises for class. However, they are a little scattered and the answer key for each lesson in the back isn't necessarily easy to locate. I am able to gleen some extra exercises for class once in awhile, but I really wanted to use it as sort of a workbook for them to practice, but given that it isn't user friendly, I had to abandon that idea.

  • I bought this book because it has received so many great reviews. I'm very grateful to those who wrote the reviews. This book is excellent in providing organized explanations and toefl-standard tests. The model tests are really great exercises. The CD-ROM has a good quality. There is only one weakness, I think. I wish the writing review section has more detailed guidelines and different kinds of essay examples. Overall, I strongly recommend this book!

  • A lot of my friends recommended this book for me, but I didn't really appreciate their advice until I took the test. The book leads you step-by-step into establishing a good base of English for the test, or at least refresh the knowledge that you already have. I believe that I owe a significant portion of my 287 CBT (660 paper based equivalent) score to this book. With it's eight model tests on the CD, which are far more difficult than that in the actual test, you'll be well prepared. There seems to be a problem with the Adaptive Test in the CD though, it gives quite strange scores at the end, but overall, this book is the best book that you can buy to get the score that you want in TOEFL.
