America’s future, 4. th. e. We need some sophisticated standards to use in evaluating the degree and kind of threat each of the challenges we examine poses for democratic politics.

American Democracy in Peril: Seven Challenges to America's Future. I thought this book was very well thought out and persuasive. In the book, Hudson explains eight reasons why America falls short of being a true democracy.

Provocative and engaging, this book invites us to reflect on eight major challenges to American democracy today. It is an eye-opening mix of political thought and current issues, raising such hotly debated questions as: In fighting terrorism does our national security state threaten the very democratic rights it is defending? Does the expansion of judicial power in American politics constitute a challenge to our democracy? How does the privileged position of business in our society undermine democracy? Woven throughout Hudson's arguments are contemporary events -- the collapse of Enron and Worldcom, the Supreme Court's involvement in the election 2000, the aftermath of September 11th. In response to each challenge to American democracy Hudson provides a balanced, clear-sighted recommendation for reform. His practical suggestions empower citizens to revitalize American democracy to overcome the perils of complacency and conventional wisdom.
  • interesting read. Using it for my political science class. Not on my to read list, but worth reading with respect to the class. A little too much usage of $10 words that are not needed, but that is my preference. It is much harder to be plain and concise than it is to use a thesaurus.

  • I disagree with John Howell's comment. This is an excellent book for anyone who is interested in the problems that face America. Hudson lays out eight challenges that pose a threat to American Democracy (political, social, economic and racial challenges to name a few). This book is highly informative. Hudson explains the issues in great detail. Just one chapter of his book will make you feel like you're up to date on American politics and will give you a seat at the table for any political conversation. This book is a must have and is an essential piece of a well-rounded education.

  • ITS OK

  • This is the absolute worst book I've ever read. I was assigned to read this for a political science class at my liberal arts college. What I struggle with is Hudson's complete lack of objectivity. If Hudson could run the US, we'd be a socialist nation, run by a parliament where wealth is redistributed among all citizens. I hate that I had to pay money to read this extreme left-wing GARBAGE. Socialism is not what America was founded on and I have no idea why anyone would care what this person has to say about America and our democracy. Every word of this atrocious book made my blood boil. Reading this book was a waste of my time and buying is was a waste of my money--I hate that this person made money off my purchase. I hope he redistributes his royalties from this book to all the system-suckers living on welfare while I work my buns off to support them and families with my tax dollars.

  • I am a college student at Temple University and I had to read this book for my political science class. I thought this book was very well thought out and persuasive. In the book, Hudson explains eight reasons why America falls short of being a true democracy.

I learned very much from this book and I suggest it to somebody who wants to learn about the United States' democratic system and how it could work better!

  • This book does a great job at exposing some of the serious structural problems that threaten the future of democracy in the U.S. I highly recommend it for students and scholars of the American political system.

  • As a professor of political science, there's just no way I'd ever assign this book. Consider the title, and the fact that the book makes very little reference to America being designed not as a democracy at all but as a republic. The other major flaw is that I find it unbelieveable that eight perils to American democracy could be put forth and that there is apparently no reference to voter fraud. We're having more votes cast than there are voters in many precincts. Now THAT is a threat to American democracy. I recommend this book for the shredder.
