Geoffrey C. Bowker, University of California, San Diego Sismondo’s Introduction to Science and Technology Studies,.

Sergio Sismondo’s book represents a very useful and clear introduction to Science and Technology Studies (STS), a relatively new academic field that has at its core the relationship between scientific knowledge, technological systems, and society. The rich set of references can help readers who want to learn more. Theor Med Bioeth, 1 May 2012). For an introduction to science and technology studies, one cannot find a better book. Sismondo sets a high standard for clarity of writing for books aimed at university students.

It contextualizes Callon's concepts within science and technology studies, and indicates the main lines of influence on his thinking about economic processes. Callon's work also opens up a number of debates and challenges to current perspectives within economic sociology. Finally, the article considers the way in which Callon's perspective reconfigures both the relation of politics and economics, and the nature of politics itself.

Sergio Sismondo’s book represents a very useful and clear introduction to Science and Technology Studies (STS), a relatively new academic field that has at its core the relationship between scientific knowledge, technological systems, and society. Even if not equally diffused, STS is becoming an important interdisciplinary field of investigation in North America and Europe

Sismondo's much-needed book fills a gap left by existing introductions to the field of science and technology studies. It consistently and usefully integrates philosophical concerns with the critical social science perspectives that have dominated the field.

Sismondo's much-needed book fills a gap left by existing introductions to the field of science and technology studies. It also offers excellent capsule surveys of some of the field's most influential thinkers. -Sheila Jasanoff, Harvard University. This book is a wonderful tool with which to think

May 25, 2018 Elinor rated it really liked it. I read this for university and it's a very useful and concise overview of the STS field. Unlike a lot of similar books, the writing style is very clear and it was a pleasure to read, despite it being so content dense.

This volume provides a roadmap to the complex interdisciplinary terrain of science and technology studies. Provides an accessible overview of science and technology studies. Features numerous empirical studies and illustrative examples. Focuses on the central debates and key theoretical advances. Includes topics such as realism and social construction, discourse and rhetoric, objectivity, the role of experiment and theory, controversies, and the critique of science and technology.
  • This book breaks the boundaries that often separate social and physical sciences. It explains STS and ST&S confusions and explains the historical and philosophical foundations of the discipline. It offers insight to the complex world of interdisciplinary research and suggests understanding for the problems and possibilities of science. I absolutely encourage anyone interested in research to consider this book as a supplement to their reading list.

  • Science and Technology Studies is a complex field of research with a century long history involving numerous disciplines. The problems the field deals with are often complex and technical. That Sismondo managed to pack practically every major debate into such a concise book, is almost a superhuman achievement. The book covers philosophical issues such as falsificationism and the Duhem-Quine thesis, as well as examining positivism and other epistemological positions. The whole range of sociological contributions over the past three decades, and also feminist contributions, are presented clearly and illustrated with examples. The author also critiques all the major arguments in the field, showing that each has problems, and that the debate continues. This is simply the best concise introduction to STS currently available. It is an invaluable aid to teaching (I use it in my own class "Introduction to STS" at the University of California, Davis). Yet it should not be thought of simply as a textbook. It is so lucidly written that it will give any educated reader a solid understanding of the field of STS.

  • I gained a Masters in science and technology studies in the mid-1980s. It opened my eyes to the possibilities of a sociological study of a field, science, that claimed that no such study was possible-- "Hey, we're scientists, purest of the pure, and what we do is for truth, justice and the scientific way". Think that British professorial twit Robin Cox. I enjoyed the degree immensely.

This book is an easy-to-read survey of the field from its origins, which are not so long ago, to date. If I were doing my Masters today, I would expect this to be the very first book set for reading.

  • This book is full of words. The words are not at all meant to improve society or science. The words are supposed to problematise science and technology.

The basic idea is that science and technology are manmade ideas. On one level we can all agree on this fact. However, the Science & Technology studies field is stuck on this idea and they show it over and over again with qualitative studies. Nothing wrong with qualitative studies, but there comes a point where quantification can help. I would like to know what factors determine if a science is more or less socially constructued. I would like to have the term socially constructued defined in much more detail. It is not an either or construct. Time for the field to progress and find some new research questions. That is unlikely to happen anytime soon because the authors in the field do not believe in progress, quantification and they seem to hate building on each others' work in any detail. This can clearly be seen by people reading this review and giving it negative feedback.

Stay far away is my recommendation. And for those who don't, keep the negative votes coming.

  • I got it used, and it's so clean with no bents and scratches It's like I bought a new one! I got the book quick too. Thanks!

  • Great to read if you're not immersed in science and want to know what is happening in that world. Read it for class, soc 495.

  • This new edition remains an ideal book for undergraduate study, covering the main areas of Science and Technology Studies. It is easy to read and gives key information about the subject. Sismondo is one of the most influencial authors in STS.

  • I have taught Intro to Science and Technology Studies using this book as the main text and supplemented by other selected readings. I find the 10-15 page chapters provide an excellent overview of the topics in this field for the undergraduate level. This book hits all the main points in a very accessible manner. I hope that, in reviewing reviews, potential buyers of this book pay attention to whether a reviewer deals with the intended purpose of the book (to introduce and summarize a field) versus the substance of the material that the book summarizes. In other words, I don't have to like psychoanalytic theory but I'm quite silly if I'm critical of the book that summarizes psychoanalytic theory instead of being critical at Freud et al (i.e. don't shoot the messenger).
