  • Got the book as a gift for my boyfriend. Very happy with the condition of the book. He held off buying this book for years because it was quite pricey, as it is technically a text book. He says it isn't an easy read, but fascinating none the less. He says he is very happy with the book. He tells me everyone who wants to understand the present condition of the body politic and how we got to this point should read this book. If you want to understand how we went from a nation governed by a Constitution of limited government to our present system with the government having unbridled power to do what it thinks is "good". This book explains the "evolution" of our government starting with the first two Progressive Presidents from both parties; Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson.

  • "Progressivism" is a word that we hear often today. What is Progressivism? Many on the political Left, including Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, et. al. have described themselves as modern-day "Progressives" who want to remake America. This book presents, in their own words, the vision that early 20th-Century Progressives had to transform America into a utopian nanny state. Is this what Americans want?

  • Although the reading of the subject matter can be quite dry, I found it interesting to read the Progressives' own words for a glimpse at their mindset. It's troubling that these people had such disdain for the Constitution and our founding fathers. If you want to see where and when our nation started to go down the wrong path, look no further than the administrations of Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson.

  • While some heavy reading for sure, this is an important book to se how we as a country have gotten into the mess we are in today. Progressives are on both sides of the isle have and still exist, and both sides have contributed to our current situation. One thing is clear Progressives are not the road map to solving any of the problems we face today.......in short Progressives are the problem.

  • Very good at telling about the genesis of the philosophy and where it's going. An oncoming freight train!

We're from the Government and we're here to help, because you're not smart enough to run your own life.

  • I bought this book because I wanted to know what PROGRESSIVES say about PROGRESSIVISM. This book achieved exactly that. I was completely satisfied in that respect. On that count alone, the book deserves 5 stars. My biggest fear before reading this book was that it would be "a conservative's take on progressivism." I though it may have snippets of this and that assembled to make progressives look really bad. IT WAS NOT. This book consists of complete speeches, complete chapters from books and other NOT OUT OF CONTEXT sources. All the editors did was write the introduction at the beginning of the book and then a short paragraph at the top of each entry putting it in its historical context. So, the review that claimed this was a biased book OBVIOUSLY did not READ the book.

Woodrow Wilson and Teddy Roosevelt played very large in this book. Wilson was VERY dry reading. Teddy Roosevelt was very lively reading. There were many others in here, too that ranged from interesting to very dry. One bonus that I did not expect was some insight into the U.S.'s entry into WWI. Very interesting stuff.

I read somewhere in the other reviews here that Beck recommended this book. I don't know if that's true or not. I'm a regular listener, but I don't recall hearing that. Maybe I wasn't listening that day. Regardless, you can listen to Glenn Beck all day long. From that, you can learn what GLENN BECK says about progressives. Admittedly, not a "Fair and Balanced" view of that ideology. So, I wanted to get the rest of the story. This book was it. (BTW, Beck's picture of progressives is more or less accurate. He puts horns and a tail on them-but...his facts are pretty much right on)

If you are interested in learning what progressives say about progressivism-THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU!

  • Great collection of Progressive writers! Highly recommended!

  • Fantastic Resource! The editors did an amazing job discussing and explaining the tenets of Progressivism. Very easy to understand and follow. The Progressive Era may have been a century ago, but the decisions and policies are still with us. Liberals are leaving that term behind and again embracing the Progressive moniker. It is important to know what they mean when they claim (as Hilary Clinton has done) they are "Progressive."
