Each chapter in this thorough, nized book follows the contours of sequence, event, and connection, emphasizing the most significant events and changes of the period covered. Politics, economics, and culture are woven into an interrelated pattern, focusing the reader's attention on the way various facets of history interact and connect. This logical approach makes for a uniquely engaging, accurate presentation of American history.

American Passages places a unique emphasis on cause-and-effect relationships over time, offering students a complete, compelling narrative, and providing balanced coverage of political, economic, social, cultural, military, religious, and intellectual history. Rather than grouping facets of historical change into "themes" or "topics," the authors focus on the intertwined nature of three characteristics of time: sequence, simultaneity, and contingency. The Third Edition includes four new Passages features that use visuals and narratives to illustrate the passage of time and act as both a summary of previous material and a bridge to new chapters. These essays are accompanied by maps that indicate political boundaries, settlements, and geographical changes; charts of population growth; a comprehensive timeline; and photographs.
  • Using for school

  • A++++ good seller

  • good

  • Well, it's a textbook. It did what a textbook is suppose to do, increase knowledge!

  • American Passages is one of the best textbook about America's history from the foundation of Jamestown, to the Civil War, and ending on Obama's presidency in 2008. I highly recommend American Passages if you are a history major or if you like reading about America's history.

  • It's not a very usefull textbook, but then again that could have just been my teacher's use of it.

  • American Passages is a decent and remarkably readable survey text, but I quickly noticed that this particular edition contains quite a few grammatical and formatting errors. In some extreme cases, figures and their descriptions are even mismatched, which can throw the "big picture" of entire sections into disarray. Don't get me wrong, though: considering the price, I would've purchased this book even with prior knowledge of the errors. Just keep in mind that purchasing the "Advantage" edition comes with its own set of disadvantages.

  • Love it!
