The 2013 updated fifth edition of the acclaimed The Middle East and the United States brings together scholars and diplomats from the Middle East, Europe, and North America to provide an objective, cross-cultural assessment of US policy toward the Middle East. Regional experts David W. Lesch and Mark L. Haas include a new chapter dedicated to the events of the Arab Spring and its aftermath, looking with a special eye to the impact on US interactions with the region.

The text also features five new chapters discussing the superpowers and the Middle East throughout the Cold War; the Bush and Obama administrations and the Arab-Israeli conflict; contemporary US-Syrian relations; the importance of ideology to US-Iranian relations under the last three administrations; and US relations with al-Qa'ida.

Carefully edited and reorganized to place a greater emphasis on current events, The Middle East and the United States provides comprehensive and authoritative coverage of US foreign policy and Middle East political history from the first World War through the Arab Spring and beyond.

  • Offers many perspectives on US involvement in the region. Chapters are well edited and cited.

  • Useful and relevant monography for my paper.

  • Terrible book. Angry I purchased it and didnt open it once during the class. Apparently the prof. Realized how terrible this book is too. Its written like a really long novel. No structure. Boring read. Im incredibly interested in the subject, I can't imagine how bad this would push away a student that maybe wasn't as interested. Just because you can write a book doesn't mean you should. A good author should make a history book not as boring as some history can be.

  • This book is very well-written and very informative. I had to write several papers for my class and this book assisted me in doing so. It is easy to read, even for those who have no previous knowledge of the subject. Each chapter consists of a singular topic, so it is very easy to understand and search the book for a particular topic. I learned a lot just from opening the book.

  • I had to purchase this book for one of my classes. U.S. foreign policy in the middle east.
If you are looking for this book to last a long time, you may want to look for it in hard back, because the paper edges wear out pretty quickly, but that is to be expected with paperback books. The text is a good size for comfortable reading.
