The history of Russia from 1991 to the present began with the dissolution of the Soviet Union (USSR) on 26 December 1991. The Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) was the largest republic within the USSR, but until 1990 it had no significant independence.

Professor of History, Director of the Russian and East European Center University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. C. One of the major themes is power. 1. We will explore how political rulers used state power and justified their authority. Mark Steinberg completed his undergraduate work at the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1978 and received his P. in European history at the University of California at Berkeley in 1987. 2. We also look at the critical arguments made by peasant rebels, intellectuals, and dissidents.

The study of Russian (and Soviet) history has presented scholars, in and out of Russia, with multiple challenges. Some of these are historiographic problems that historians and social scientists share regardless of the area of their inquiry, while others stem more specifically from Russian and (particularly) Soviet conditions. Under these conditions, Western works on Russia and the Soviet Union, as well as studies published in fairly inaccessible or even obscure publications, assume relatively greater importance than they otherwise might. And yet, many students of Russian and Soviet history remain ignorant of some seminal works, some challenging intellectual controversies, and some valuable case studies, due to the inability of libraries to acquire and maintain the publications where such contributions have appeared. The present, vastly important set of 14 volumes (11 seen by Book News ) makes available valuable articles and papers often neglected or forgotten. While the collected articles don't, of course, adequately cover the totality of Russian and Soviet history, they supplement or modify in a significant way the sources and interpretations, the raw material, and the conceptualizations offered in standard book-length histories and texts.
