Robert Cawdrey did not attend university, but became a school teacher in Oakham, Rutland, in 1563. In 1565, Cawdrey was ordained deacon and priest in 1570, and on 22 October 1571, he was made rector of South Luffenham in Rutland. However, Cawdrey was sympathetic to Puritan teachings, and got in trouble with the Church authorities.

The most important modern reference work for Middle English studies
  • This volume is only a handful of the roughly 15000 pages in the complete Middle English Dictionary (MED). The title indicates that this is the second section of the complete W words list in the MED. Very authoritative.

  • Clearly many of the other reviewers are not medieval scholars or they would have realized that Middle English, much like Present Day English, had a large vocabulary that is difficult to contain in a short volume. Furthermore, this invaluable research tool contains literary references, variations, etc. Amateurs beware! Anyway, the MED is one of the most important items in medieval scholarship, but yes...it is comprised of numerous volumes. You can always use the online version if you don't want to buy it.

  • I merely wish to point out that the title does say 'U4', and that if you know anything about the 'Middle English Dictionary' you would understand that it is only one of about 150 fascicules. Still useful if you happen to have lost one (which I have).
