Mark Mengel, L. Schwiebert. This is an amazing book to keep around. It has an extraordinary amount of information in a listed outline format. The conditions are listed by complaint ("Low Back Pain", "Cough"). This is extremely helpful for any medical student or resident trying to work on tuning their differential diagnosis skills or for looking up how you would work up a condition. A quick reference guide to the diagnosis and treatment of common primary care problems. The information is presented in such a way as to help students and physicians quickly form a list of possible diagnoses, perform a cost-effective diagnostic work-up, and prescribe therapy for the most common causes of acute and chronic complaints. Principles of clinical decision making and efficient management strategies are integrated throughout the book.
  • Concise and straight forward clinical informations which obviously were made as quick reference. The contents are okay and useful at busy clinical settings, but it could have been alot easier to use if its layout of the contents were more user friendly. The publishers might want it to be used as a portable reference with less pages and smaller size, but the contents are poorly organized, and too much informations are packed in small pages. Since the book was made for primary care providers who usually treats patients at office settings, I think the size could be larger for better layouts. Other references like 5 Minute Clinical Consult, or CMDT could do better job for that purpose.

  • Good reference.

  • So this is a fantastic book for outpatient primary care; covers everything you commonly see from newborns to geriatrics including Ob/Gyn; plus it's in a great format of common complaints which is how patients actually present in clinic. However, it is definitely NOT a book to carry around in your white coat; much too thick & heavy. Knowing that from the dimensions and weight I wasn't too concerned since, hey, it has a full text download for your "Mobile Device". No where on the website though does it say that the download is NOT compatible with Apple products. Seriously?? Everyone and their cousin has either an iPhone or iPad; almost every doc I work with has one or both. Also, since I didn't realize this until AFTER I had scratched off the inside cover to reveal the access code for the download, I couldn't even return the book!! Be forewarned all ye Apple users.

  • I have many textbooks of Family Medicine in my library, but I have to say that this is the best. It covers the 3 aspects of Family Medicine: care of acute problems, care of chronic problems, and health maintainence succintly yet thoroughly. It contains all the important tables and algorithms. Due to its 3 part organization, it is easy to find needed information. I have been in practice for 40 years and still find myself going back to it again and again. I just wish I had this text in my library 40 years ago.

  • These books whether used or new always come in perfect condition! I've used them countless times for my NP program and will use them thousands more!

  • I was looking for a medical reference book to be kept at home. After a lot of personal research and recommendations, I finally narrowed upon Family medicine book. The contents are very good, detailed and accurate. I would recommend the book to anyone who needs to have medical reference guide handy.

  • I used this for family medicine clerkship. It is good because it outlines all major categories of ambulatory illnesses/problems and explains current treatments/recommendations. Some of the information goes beyond what you are looking for when preparing for the shelf (i.e., advice on patient counseling) but, at the same time I emphasize the fact that this book does a great job of concisely summing up the current guidelines and classifications for all sorts of diseases, and uses tables effectively. I recommend this book as a good reference, but you will definitely want to use a source that has a bunch of questions, like Lange's family medicine clerkship question and answer to supplement this (I took the shelf today and actually saw one question on the test that was identical to a question in the Lange question and answer book). All in all, a good buy --- especially since it is a fairly small book, easy to keep with you to study and concise and informative.
